Description

The time is yesterday and the Cold War is in full swing. Through means devious and dubious you have seized power in the Caribbean island country of Tropico, where you now rule as the all-powerful "El Presidente".

You decide whether you want to use your army to secure your power base in the best traditions of corrupt, unscrupulous tyrants everywhere or lead your people to prosperity in your role as generous elder statesman.

No matter whether you turn Tropico into a vacation paradise, a police state or a modern industrial nation - you will always have to defend your actions before your people! Wander through Tropico as El Presidente in order to intimidate political opponents, hold populist speeches or just to enjoy your country's own Caribbean flair.

Don't forget to keep a sharp eye on the dangers and side-effects of your absolute power! Danger lurks on every corner, be it militant revolutionaries bent on installing a communist junta, or the machinations of the superpowers USA and the Soviet Union, both of whom would like to see a more amenable ruler in strategically important Tropico!

History takes its course with events such as the Cuba crisis, papal visits and other actual decisive historical events.

The only question is whether or not you can play a role in that history!

Can be very fun, but mostly too easy.

The game is really fun at first, with amusing humor, a nice setting, and even nice music. The gameplay consists of reaching specific goals without being hated too much (and thus voted against by the majority), or without your entire population dying.

The game looks beautiful, and has plenty of elements in it such as different factions, citizen happiness and thoughts and wants, the different edicts, the US and USSR influence, and all the different buildings and ways to make money.

However, the game simply gets too easy in a lot of the missions. The time they give you to do them is far more than enough, and in some of them it's just hard to lose. In one mission all that's needed to win is set up a couple of mines, and just wait until you earn the needed money. I tried to see what happens if I destroy any building I can in the beginning and build just statues (which is pretty amusing), and it took more than a few years to finally face some negative consequences (and I wasn't even voted out, the citizens died of hunger).

Some missions CAN get challenging though, and the city building aspects themselves are pretty fun. It's nice seeing your island flourish or just to design it in a way you like.

Alot of fun being "El Presidente"

I have to say out of all the builder sandbox games I have played this is my favorite. The ability to control your own island nation from its government to farmland is crazy fun. The game has a campaign similar to most builder games where you have to complete certain objectives by a certain time period. Which is all fine and dandy but the game's core gameplay I believe revolves around the open ended "sandbox mode" where you can do whatever you want and not be tied down by objectives. So whether you enjoy being a glorious benefactor to your people or cruel dictator tropico is worth a buy.

Tropico a fine game, but it has problems

virtualflyer | Aug. 12, 2011 | See all virtualflyer's reviews »

Tropico 3 is really fine, I played the game for some hours without any problem. Surely it's well designed, it has stunning graphics for that genre of game, not very serious, but very nice to see, the gameplay is well balanced, but I find it a bit difficult for beginners. Nothing to say, nice game, it should only have less bugs. Else, it could have been a 80-85.

Good morning Tropico this is juanito. That is something you will hear one this game. You are in control of your own island. You can place any building you want and make the economy how you want it. For example you can have an economy based with tobacco. Or a military one where everyone hates you but cant go against you haha. The United States and Russia could both attack you also if they start to dislike you. By far one of my favorite parts is the dlc absolute power. With that you can kill Juanito. And trust me play this game and you ill want to.

After initially purchasing and playing this on a console and enjoying i thoroughly, I had high hopes for the PC version. The game looks great and has a soundtrack that will set you dancing around whilst playing. The missions ease you in and the option for freeplay or god mode just add to it. It would be nice if there were some online competitive mode, but with Tropico 4 just around the corner who knows?
