Ok, its no Homeworld. Still... Ever try to fight multiple battles at the same time using the same, limited pool of units? In addition, you can't just spam a single unit as the battle plays out like a massive game of rock-paper-scissors. Some units are strong against fighters but do little damage to big targets, another is good at taking down hard targets but will lose to fighters. Space here is also 3D, alveit limited 3D as the individual maps are fairly small. Thing is, do you think you can handle defending a target on one map, attacking a base on a second, protecting your flagship on a third map while being actively attacked on a fourth? Your basically playing multiple levels of an RTS at the same time, and units can move between levels. You can only control one group at a time, so generally need to leave at least some of the decision to the basic AI. All of this happens in realtime. This game gets hard, even more so if you play on hardcore, which disables tactical pause. It is rare your completely safe even if all enemy units are destroyed. However, the game is also fairly flexible as you get to choose your tactics and ships each level. You can play aggressive, defensive, stealthy. Use big units or small units of your choice. There are a limited number of points where you can put down support buildings, which can repair, protect, attack fighters, attack capitals, and so on. The enemy doesn't play fair, often having multiple points where enemy ships can spawn, though you can destroy these like any other building. Expect to be outnumbered often and just deal with it. So this is a mix between Homeworld, Warcraft, and Command and Conquer. If you don't mind a difficult RTS which requires tactics and dividing your attention, give this a spin.
WHen I started and played Ancient Space for a while I had this feeling that I played something like that already... yup, it have this Homeworld 2 aura. Even music have this Homeworld 2 feeling, which means it's really good. So, for a strategy game which take place up there... I must say, it's pretty good. You can complain about units which are harder to notice on some backgrounds and there are some graphics that looks like from some old games but that's all. Oh, and system requirements are pretty harsh so be sure you own a powerful PC. If you enjoy this kind of games I'm sure you will enjoy Ancient Space too.
This game is very fun, and I would probably be playing it as much as I played Civ 6, but I have one tiny problem. literally, tiny. The games hud, players, and everything else is absolutely TINY! It's so hard to see your characters, nevermind your enemies! Besides this, the game is actually pretty fun, and contains many phases of dialogue, action, and lots of hours put into making good strategic tactics in order to win the battles. The ships all have their different characteristics and levels of attack (like most strategy games) but this game really emphasizes the "Space" attribute that is advertises. The game is altogether very fun, but almost too small to play.
This game has great potential but the size of the units and the tiny fonts make this game very difficult to play. The story telling and gameplay is similar to jupiter nexus incident except most of the units are expendable/replaceable. The enemy ai doesn't seem to have any resources management. They just spawn ships through portals and seem to come in never ending waves. This design decision is abit puzzling because the player is constrained by resources generated by nodes similar to company of heroes. Between missions you can upgrade each class of ship with resources you find from discoveries. Ship damage is based on opposing ship type meaning each ship is better at tackling different sized ships eg 1dmg vs small 5 dmg vs large etc. You can upgrade the ships in different mutually exclusive ways making them more diverse or more specialised in the enemies they tackle. The storytelling is reasonable but dont expect AAA standards. The voice actors sound unenthusiastic at best. The strategy part of the game is abit of a fragfest, just throw everything you have at the enemy click as many abilities as you can and it'll all work out. With most units being expendable strategy isn't really necessary nor rewarded. Its difficult to say with the graphics. Often you spend so much time zoomed out all you see are the unit icons (this game is really really tiny!) If you liked nexus jupiter incident this game may interest you but I stress this game doesn't come close in quality.
