The first open world in the series, it’s what I am most excited about. I’m a huge fan of Borderlands and playing online alongside friends and tackling different missions whilst supporting your teammates. Ghost Recon achieves just that, minus the split screen, but we’re really spoilt when it comes to the games superb graphics and the sheer beauty of the map and world.

If you’re a fan of the Ghost Recon series or maybe Wildlands is new for you, it’s really worth jumping in just for the open world alone. Let alone the incredible line up of Ghosts, enemies, weaponry and the ability to customise and make the game your own.

Very flawed but good at the same time

vaaqo

Ghost recon Wildlands is a brilliant game in terms of open world with stealth/tactical elements, it is perfect for doing it solo or team up with friends/online players. However I must say that this game is very flawed, for example the worst bit they ever did for this was not make a jump mechanic, I like to play sneaky when attacking bases so I go the most obscure way, however this has got me stuck so many times because either they didn't test the game fully and I get glitched in rocks or fall through the world, but also I can't spam jump to get out as you have to press space to climb and a lot off rocks you cannot climb. Secondly the allied AI is pretty bad, the only thing they are good for is the timed shooting or cannon fodder, Thirdly the driving is pretty bad, however you can do some cool drifts with them. Not everything is bad though, for starters the customisation on your character is good and you don't have to buy anything from the store if you don't have to because apart from the PVP mode you get all the weapons in the game. I love the idea off customising your weapons every little detail from scopes to rail to even the firing switch. There's lots off different ways to play it whether you play stealthily or tactically is up to you, at distance with a sniper or up close and personal with a pistol it's all up to you. Overall my opinion is 50/50 about this game if you can get it when it's cheap then good but otherwise I would not pay the full price for this game as the flaws are annoying. If you are planning on buying this game then I advice to play with friends and don't do what I do which is go obscure routes over rocks to get to your prey.

Flawed yet fun well worth it for less than 20.

This game is not perfect, you don't have to look far to see the plethora of complaints that the gaming community has about this game. For the most part I see these flaws (repetition, performance, lacklustre AI, horrific driving controls/design etc etc) however this is one occasion where I have been able to look past these issues. It is important to state early on that I am not playing this game co-op and I also don't intend to, many professional reviewers have said that this is somewhat the saving grace for the game, allowing for tactical game-play or all-out madness to ensue depending on the friends you play with and the approach you take. Playing co-op is not something that appeals to me personally however I clearly see the potential here for this kind of game-play. I do not advocate the idea that this game should be disregarded if like me, you want to play alone. The teammate AI is absolutely pathetic, developers should be embarrassed to release products with such glaringly under developed aspects, it completely confuses me why a developer would lovingly craft all of the positive aspects that are here and then heap in an AI that serves essentially no purpose other than to follow you around (invisible to the entire game world until they either are engaged directly or you the player give a direct order to open fire) and revive you. The fact that the AI teammates do not act out of free will however does allow you, on single player, to essentially just play lone wolf. The only time the team is ever functioning as a team is when I set up a sync shot or I need to be revived, in these two tasks they perform their jobs to a degree that either pulls of the kill you needed or gets you back on your feet to continue fighting. I have found hours of enjoyment so far in this game-world, the map is astounding. Ubisoft are leading the way when it comes to generating fictional game worlds that feel vast yet effectively designed in a way that I never feel I am wandering aimlessly. Objectives within the game are repeated over and over, what matters though is that I personally find these tasks extremely fun. I sometimes feel the repetitiveness of an open world game being criticised is at times unfair. What else can you expect to do in a military type open world game other than sneak/charge into enemy bases, kill HVT's and locate intel?Look at any critically acclaimed open world game and each one has some form of glaring repetitiveness, its when the task itself is not fun that I feel there is a major problem and that isn't the case here. The graphics are truly stunning, guns look amazingly realistic, reloading animations are accurate and well designed, its satisfying to watch at times. Optimisation here is reasonably poor, I have managed a mostly solid 60fps at 1440p on a 1070 however this takes some minor tweaking, the poor optimisation shows through when most adjustments have no effect whatsoever on FPS. As always with Ubisoft games there are layers of DRM here and although it may be denied by them directly I personally feel its clearly holding back the performance of a number of their current titles. The sound in this game is one of the best examples I have experienced in any game, with a good set of headphones on bullets crack, snap and ping around you making each gunfight acoustically pleasing and immersing me to levels whereby I rarely experience in a video game. The game play here is most fun when you approach the game with a level of imagination and patience, I only paid ?16 for the title and approached it after playing first over a year ago in the open beta. I could immediately tell that steps have been made to improve but not completely fix the problems which prevented me from ever paying close to full price for this game. The driving controls and physics have certainly been patched since when I last played. Driving land vehicles is not fun, at all, however it is now functional and serves a purpose. However, flying helicopters is now fun there is essentially only two kinds of helicopter in the game and the smaller attack style is much more enjoyable, I find this the best way to hop around the huge map and have only used fast travel once or twice when finding myself without a method of transport. If you get this title cheap and approach it with an unbiased mind and a bit of imagination/patience I am confident you will find enjoyment. It most certainly is a complete departure in almost every way from what a "Ghost Recon" game has been for the last 16 or so years. If you want a military simulator, look elsewhere, this game sits in a strange place for me, its not a sim but its also not just a sandbox for blowing things up. There is tactical game-play to be found. I find the most fun playing at the highest difficulty, with elements of the HUD switched off so that I can be immersed in the stealth/carnage. The sound here is a massive help to mask over all the small flaws, without a good set of cans or a decent speaker set up I truly feel that this game would not have held my intention for half the time it has so far. In conclusion, as is often the case today a fantastic idea is being held back by an accumulation of small but glaring flaws, as consumers we are getting used to overlooking and just accepting what is truly lazy or un-apologetically inconsiderate practices. Games like this would benefit so much from a few more months in the oven, without a culture of pushing unfinished products out of the door to feed investors pockets in time for set release dates we may see games like this flourish into the masterpiece that the groundwork has been laid for. I look forward to seeing where Ubisoft take "Ghost Recon" from here, it can only improve.

Only worth it if you have three friends you want to play through the game with

Legolas_Katarn

Large, varied, beautiful environment and weather effects with four player co-op. A large number of missions, though the side activities and tagging supplies get old fast and unless you are playing through the entire thing with three friends it is likely to long overstay its welcome. Having to find weapons and accessories is a terrible feature, you will likely have a situation where you will find multiple sniper rifles without finding a scope to put on them and then find yourself relying on the custom weapons you get from the ending missions to each province. Terrible cover system that will change what shoulder you are aiming from almost anytime you pass by an obstacle, often making close combat more difficult than it has to be. Annoying stupid awful characters with some of the worst dialogue and conversations between characters I've ever heard, which I suppose is fitting for their job, the only positive thing I can give the writing is having an ending that is basically just saying America made the country worse than before. Sudden fights interrupting radio conversations and having a character say to wait and then continue is a great feature, it's unfortunate that I usually don't want to hear them talk and that many of the conversations are missing and intel is likely to be skipped if you are playing co-op. If you have three friends that want to play through the game with you then the game can be worth it but alone it is mostly just average in every area, with a a nice environment and a few poor decisions thrown in.

A perfect game.

StraussJ

I use the words perfect game in the title of my review, because it is a game that has an amazing graphic section without a doubt. The gameplay is quite good and easy to understand and has a great variety. I did not know that this game existed I did not see any trailer or anything to prove it myself and it is certainly one of the best experiences, it is a really enjoyable game, I recommend it.

Great when played with friends, mediocre when single player or multi with random players

apelev

The game has good mechanics, huge open world and a straightforward but interesting story. Single player is awful. You don't have much options to command your team and this often makes you feel you are playing solo, not with a team. The game at this moment has very little players that are low level and it makes it impossible to find someone at the same zone as you. There are no options to see public games and the only thing you can do is click a button and wait to be teleported to some random player at a zone 5km away from you. So if you have a friend or two to play the game with, it will be a great experience. "Shelved" for now since I don't have friends who have the game to play with.
