Dark Void is a very mediocre game, not distinguished by anything special, it simply stays in the shadow of more interesting competition. Later in the few stages in which we fight and in the air which could have been an interesting element if it was done correctly but it simply isn't. You can play, but is it worth in the flood of upcoming hits? I honestly doubt it.
Dark Void is a game that is simply average and generic in every aspect; there are a lot of bland spots in the game, especially at the beginning and the story suffers by the ending from being rather rushed. However, the jet-packs makes the gameplay a little more manageable by bringing variety to combat. As a whole, the game feels generic and void of any memorable moments and given that there are other, far more developed games that involve similar aspects such as the Mass Effect series, there simply isn't a reason to play this game.
If you want to experience this game, fair warning, the first hour or so is a tedious cover based shooter, that's not terribly interesting either. But, if you suffer through that(maybe suffer is not the right word, it's not bad, just a little boring) then you finally get your jetpack, and the game becomes surprisingly better from that point. It is still a cover based shooter, but suddenly, you can fly, and bet above or behind the enemies covers, making the action a lot more dynamic. The enemies doesn't seem to be able to react to this to well, beyond trying to shoot at you, before they are killed, or escape, if they have the time, but to be honest, there isn't much to do when you're flanked that way. The story involves tesla somehow, but to be honest, one week after this game came out, I got Mass Effect 2, and after that, I never felt the need to play with this ever again. Too bad, i could see a much better made Dark Void 2.
The creators of Dark Void must have ran out of money while making this game because whole parts of it seem sewn together. The story is disjointed and boring, while the actual game play is severely lackluster when you don't have the jet-pack. Even when you do get the jet-pack, it is really cool... for 5 minutes. Then you realize they made it a huge chore to actually use. It becomes not fun. And then the game ends. Even at the discounted price that you can get this game at, I really don't think it is worth it. A who cares about story with bad 3rd person shooting game play mixed with an interesting jet-pack mechanic isn't a game. I suggest playing Murdered Soul Suspect, a game this studio made as well. It actually is a good game, even if parts of that game seem unfinished too (the studio, Airtight Games, is now closed). This game isn't worth your time, your money or you patience. But hey, at least the cover art looks cool.
Don't be afraid to play it for few minutes more. It starts as a really decent game but as it goes, it's gets much, MUCH better. Maybe the story isn't so great but some gameplay mechanics are awesome. Like using jetpack. It was probably my favorite thing in this game. Some of locations in game are also very interesting. Sadly, this game have also "minuses". Like I said, you need to spend some time to get to interesting parts. There aren't many enemies, and kinda outdated game engine makes you think that it could have been done better. Still, it sure is worth giving a try. You will surprised, I'm sure of it.
