Developed by a team of experienced modders from the Paradox forum, Darkest Hour is a stand-alone Hearts of Iron game. The game features a mixture of short and in-depth campaigns set across the darkest chapters of the 20th century.Read full description
This game is basically a licensed modification of Hearts of Iron 2, a game from 2005. Despite its age, it is still being updated (last patch in late 2015). It is simpler than HOI3, yet challenging. It has very low system requirements and runs smoothly even on an old PC. You can start in WW1, before WW2, or during WW2. The only issue is a lack of variety after the 50's.
If you like the hearts of iron series This game is a must get. This is in my opinion the best in the Hearts of iron series because not only does the game itself has lots to offer but, the mod community adds so much more to the game and makes it even better. you can start the game from ww1 and play till the end of the 20th century, with mods. or maybe you want to play the game in an alternate history world where germany never lost the first world war you can do that too thanks to the mods. so if you enjoy grand strategy games i do highly recommend this game for you.
If you loved Arsenal of Democracy and Hearts of Iron 2, you'll love this. More provinces and the decision system is a great improvement. The map looks just beautiful. There's already plenty of mods for this game that make it even better. My only gripe is that sometimes the conditions to execute a decision are not very clear, but i can look past that.
What started as a mere mod for Hearts of Iron II game, evolved into full release of grand strategy based in The Great War times! And what is more, you can enjoy the game up to Cold War times! This title is unique, mostly because of the period it is placed in. Not WW2, but WW1. You can enjoy close battles on western front between France + BEF versus the Germany, or if you prefer, see what's happening on eastern front. You can choose to play between many countries, that were somehow involved in WW1, and you can lead them where you want. The game is played on a world map. It's a Real-Time Strategy with active pause, meaning, that you can give orders while pausing the game. If you like to play strategy games, but never played any of Paradox strategies, you should deninitely try it. It's a steep learning curve, but once you get a hang on what's going on in the game, you will enjoy it very much.
Finally it's on GMG! Good job! The game was original for the time when it came out, but there are alot of games these days who do those things better. But let's review the game when it came out. The gameplay is great, I haven't experienced any bugs. The controls are easy to learn, but sometimes a button doesn't work but this did get fixed after sometime. The music in the background is great. The game is replayable and you can play this game a thousand time and you won't find the same situation. The game is worth getting, I recommend picking it up on a sale though.
