The best game ive played in a decade

Although i bought the PC version my review is based on the PS4 version as my mainboard died 10% into the download so i went and got a PS4 copy instead. I have played a lot of games in my time but in recent years nothing has really grabbed my attention in that way where youre counting every second at work until you can get home to continue playing. Lets start with the basics, it looks fantastic, the music is stunning (somewhat reminiscent of Ghost in the Shell in many places) and if you switch to original audio (as you should) your ears will be graced with a plethora of anime voiceover heavyweights, i dont think there was a single voice i couldnt link to at least one anime. so as far as sound and vision goes its a clear 10/10 Then theres the combat, RPGs live and die based on pretty much two things in my opinion, the story and the combat system and here Nier manages to hit the sweet spot perfectly, fast paced, great control system (on a pad anyway) smooth enjoyable battles which you can approach in a variety of ways, a massive array of weapons available (as long as you make the effort to find them) and the occasional skips to bullet hell style shooter work wonderfully, ill admit i was not the biggest fan of 9S' hacking mini games but its not enough to knock the shine off this gem of a game. Next up is the story but as i dont want to ruin anything ill just say its excellently written and very engaging, if you like story driven J-RPGs you ill be in hog heaven even if you shed a tear or two in the process. overall im finding it very hard to find things to dislike about it, visual style, music, voices, story and combat system are all excellent, i wouldnt just say its a strong candidate for game of the year id say its a consideration for game of the decade

Almost Perfect!

I didn't think I would enjoy this a RPG as much as I did. I couldn't stop playing it 'till i'd seen and done everything. It's incredibly good fun to play, the combat is fast and fluid, the backstory is different and interesting, the art design is top notch and the soundtrack alone is worth admission. There are so many unique and well thought out ideas it's clear to see just how much real effort the developers put in. Even the end credits has more care put into them than some entire games I've played in the past, seriously! In my opinion it is close to perfection and should be game of the decade :) I highly recommend Nier: Automata, even at full price. P.S- Please install the FAR mod if you do buy the game, it provides a lot of fixes that will improve the experience significantly.

Flawed but brilliant

When I bought this game it first and foremost as a fan of Platinum Games. It was this that lead to a disappointment. In contrast to Bayonetta or Revengeance the combat is extremely simple with little of the mastery seen in those games. There's simply no depth to it, no need for complex combos or learning abilities like launchers or guard breaks. Instead the majority of depth comes in the dodging and avoiding the bullet hell inspired waves of projectiles littering most fights. In addition the combat is negatively affected by the leveling system where by the designers expect you to grind fights to increase level and can lead to situations where you can be killed in one shot from offscreen by a standard enemy leaving you no choice but to go back to an easier area to grind or lower the difficulty. Where the gameplay does excel is in its smooth transition from third person, to side scroller to shoot em up. At its best moments you'll slip between all three in quick succession with no loading screens or transitions. The real reason to play the game though didn't come until hours in. In simple terms this is one of the best written games I've ever played. I wont go into details but the writing has depths you can drown in and it is simultaneously the silliest and most profound writing in gaming. The middle portion of the game though is a complete chore. To the point I would recommend downloading a completed save file so you can skip the repeated sections with the new game + chapter select.

flawless game!!

i've played the game without any lag, resolution failure or crash. i'll give credit to enix for a very good job. one of the reason i love about this game is that it's story-based! just a little problem in graphics quality in cut-scenes which is no matter! after unlocking the specific chapters you'll be able to select characters that helps you to play side missions! kickass music good fighting system interesting gameplay in one word: satisfying !!!

Nier Automata is a fantastic RPG

I'm usually not a person to care for story, because in most modern games narrative and stories, in general, are generic and predictable. This is not the case with Nier Automata as the game took me on an emotional rollercoaster: constantly building on the dramatic moments or twisting the narrative completely and blowing my mind. My words cannot express how pleasantly surprised I was when I played a game, couldn't predict the story and in the end, the story actually ended up good. So basically, if you like dark or unpredictable stories - you will probably love this one. Nier: Automata's greatest strengths are its great story, characters, and gameplay. It's a literal wild ride from start to finish. Yes, it's not a technical marvel and the performance is annoying, especially when Square Enix releases it between Horizon: Zero Dawn and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands. It still a highly recommended title and one of the best game in 2017 so far.
