one of the greatest classics

saadnad123

This was the first in the Red Faction series released back in 2001; the first that began the story of a rebellion against the so-called Ultor Corporation that abuses miners on planet Mars. Later entries (the 3rd and the 4th) became third-person shooters so the gameplay changed throughout the years. At the time this game was revolutionary. Games with realistic physics were not yet released (we had to wait a couple of more years till Half Life 2, Doom 3 and Far cry came out), however, Red Faction's so-called Geo-Mod technology offered the closest experience as it had destructible environments. In practice, this meant solving our problem of a closed door by simply creating a tunnel next to it with the use of a rocket launcher. The gameplay itself is a fast-paced shooter with the usual weapons (pistol, shotgun, rifle, rocket launcher etc.) where we basically follow a linear path and regularly receive instructions from the leaders of the rebellion. Due to an altercation between a worker and a guard we are thrust into the middle of a mutiny and our best bet is to shoot at everything that moves. For some reason the sequel continues the story on Earth - a deviation that did not make this episode famous. We had to wait till Guerrilla to pick up where the Martians were left off. It was nice to play this game for a short while on Steam and see it was running perfectly. Widescreen resolutions, unfortunately, are missing (the highest we can pick is 1280x1024) but the discussion / guide sections offer solutions as well as workaround for making the multiplayer work. If you liked Guerrilla and Armageddon and you'd like to know which game started the franchise than feel free to pick this one up when on sale.

Interesting game with cool setting

legdamian

This FPS, like most following 1998, was obviously inspired by Half-Life. However, this game takes place entirely on Mars and in space (as far as I remember) and the aesthetic is full of rocks and greenish fog. Making full use of the environment, the selling point of the game was the ability to break holes through rocks. Though this technique was better by modern games like Battlefield, it's interesting to see where the technology came from before it was perfected. The game's story is like Half-Life's in that it continues continuously through the entire game and it's pretty linear, but it's a lot more lively because of the guy in your earpiece telling you where to go. If you like old-school FPS then this shouldn't disappoint you.

There are better choices

NeoJ

Well, playing this game nowadays is only recommended for old school FPS lovers (which I think I am). Red Faction is a good game, with some interesting stealth parts and some good action packaged elements that make it worth it. A good FPS, but the problem is you may have in mind that in those years incredible FPS games like Unreal or Half-Life were released doing it way better. Red Faction feels like eating a good pizza when you can eat the best out there for the same price. The only thing that Red Faction features that actually is interesting is the Geo-mod technology, that one that allows player to destroy different structures making the game better in its action element. Ok, it needed to be polished but the idea was there, and it was the first step for a technology that has survived through time and that looks really great in the next Red Faction games. Go for it only if you are out of other FPS games. It has aged well enough to deserve a try.

Mars needs a hero and is he up to the task?

TheForgery

"Like Half-Life but on Mars." ~ Reviewer. He does have a point. It is like Half-Life, with the diverse amount of weapons that can be carried and the rich sci-fi themes that condense the game but the main difference is Red Faction primarily takes place on Mars. Red Faction is one of the oldest FPS games known to gamers. However, unlike Halo: Combat Evolved which was released in the same year, Red Faction has fallen into deep obscurity. However, the game was slightly ahead of its time by featuring a unique game engine, named "Geo-Mod". It allowed players to never create the same crater hole from an explosion and permitted the creation of tunnels. The game engine actually calculated the size and shape of the hole by depending on the damage caused by a weapon/explosive. As mentioned before, numerous weapons are at the player's disposal. Almost immediately after picking up a pistol, a rocket launcher becomes available albeit with limited ammunition. When the player has to travel through enclosed areas, a shotgun can be used and when even stronger enemies take foot as the conflict progresses, a heavy machine gun, a projective beam sniper rifle, and a laser cannon become devastating to wield and demolish opposing foes. Aside from the oppressive and ruthless security force that aim to silence the insurgent mining community, aliens and small number of mutated human specimens target the player. Mercenaries are also called in, adding fuel to the heated fighting and are worse than the aforementioned enemies. This helps to alleviate the repetitiveness of the game around midway. The outdoor areas are arguably the most impressive. Red Faction has done a good job in making the surface of Mars the way it should be. The weaknesses that expose Red Faction as an unpolished game were the characters, bugs, hard-to-control vehicles, underdeveloped plot, extreme difficulty at some points, and the "forced" stealth. Most of the characters, namely your allies of the rebel force, lack the charisma and heart. It becomes easy to forget them and I lacked the remorse when one of them perishes close to the end of the game. The stealth is horrible, plain awful to say the least. In two instances, the player is given the choice to blend in with the neutral populace by surrendering their armor and weapons. This was very undesirable because there is no compensation if this is done and none of your equipment can be retrieved again. Red Faction seems to have wanted to become a Metal Gear Solid wannabe and this did not work at all. The stealth is completely optional however and there is no consequence for not being discreet, thus defeating the addition of said gameplay mechanic. Controlling the vehicles is tough and have bugs, such as being stuck and forcing a player to load an earlier save. There are allies in Red Faction but they rarely appear and never last long to withstand a few shots, regardless of the difficulty. The neutral NPCs are dumb and most are expendable, save for medical personnel. A difficulty spike exists in the game and it is frustrating to combat it. Some of the mercs wield a powerful beam weapon that can kill the player in just one hit, even on easy. They tend to run around a corner and instantly kill. Bosses, on the other hand, are no better and it will take several tries to defeat them. Finally, at the end of the game, the developers just threw a bomb that must be defused without ANY PART of the game featuring how to defuse one. This, to me, is a lazy and unnecessary element of Red Faction. The plot is weak and very forgettable. The only thing many players will remember is surviving in a rebellion against an evil corporation that released a mutant virus. There is a glitch in the Steam version in which the audio of cutscenes lag behind and are not synced. Sadly, there is no known way to fix it. Multiplayer servers are still around but there is no one playing online anymore due to the severe age. To summarize it all, I give Red Faction a C as the game has aged not very well and the gameplay is not acceptable.

A great timeless classic

gamma_rad

Red Faction is a fun first person shooter with a slight twist - the ability to blow a hole in the wall when you need to get through a locked door. Pros: Its a good old school FPS, good story, fun multiplayer but the thing that makes it stand apart is Geo-Mod. the ability to deform the land with explosives - creating tunnels, destroying walls, changing the lay of the land to fit your needs. Cons: Like many other old FPS games, slightly dated graphics and lacking AI.
