This game gets a lot of hate. Undeserved hate I might say. Usually it's about the game not being gothic-like enough or some such. But that's actually what makes it such a great game! Risen 2 follows up gothic-ish Risen game that was pretty much Gothic 1 or 2 all over again but under a different name because of legal issues. And it was a good game, but nothing really new. Then came Risen 2 that gave the players and option of becoming a pirate captain with parrot, rum and stuff! I mean how cool is that? There aren't very many pirate rpg games, in fact there's mostly just this game in that department. But it's not just the setting that makes it fun and original. It's also the new mechanics and skills that go with the theme like using your parrot to distract enemies, sending your trained monkey to grab stuff, digging up treasures from secret maps and one of the most interesting games is the indirect voodoo magic. Usually magic goes like throwing fireballs and stuff. This game's magic is about curses, buffs and controlling people with voodoo dolls which gives you new dialogue and quest solving options. And then there's ofcourse cannons, pirate ships, muskets and pistols. Overall it's a unique and entertaining game that is much better than what the reviews usually say. It tried to bring something fresh and different and it did succeed.
Don't buy Risen 2 without the DLCs. Not because it's a bad game but because you will want them later anyway. So maybe it's better to buy them one as one better-priced pack? Risen 2: Dark Waters is a sequel to a RPG game Risen. This time the game is pirates-themed, and it does the job of being a pirate RPG very well. Before Assassin's Creed IV there were surprisingly few options when it came to pirate games, and Risen 2 is good enough to be often considered better than its successor, Risen 3.
