Good gateway to tabletop rpg's

spiderhopper_hu

Talisman pretty much plays like an rpg, only with tabletop rules. I never played the "real" version of this game, but i assume it is the same as the game. anyway, the cards and the table are beautifully drawn, and while the graphics are sort of minimalist(it is a card game after all), it does the job well. The controls are fine. Some of it can be confusing at times, you need to read carefully what the spells do, because the game doesn't stop you from actively harming yourself. One time i used a spell, that can destroy a players item, and ended up destroying my own treasure chest by accident. Knowing my luck it was a mimic anyway....(not sure if this game have those, never seen one). Playing with more experienced players can be tough. Especially for first timers. The game offers a chance to practice against the AI, butt its not the same. Really not. I ended up second place, because i took risks no sane player would, and got lucky in the end.

a clunky old board game that NEEDED a slick interface... but got a clunky one

Tartrazine

The interface is an absolute MESS. It's too easy to cancel a card effect when you think you're just selecting a different target. You can't read the board during other players' turns. You CAN look at their inventory, but when you right-click on someone's card to see its details it doesn't zoom in on that card, but rather opens up a sort of "card carousel" that you have to shuffle through to find the card that YOU ALREADY CLICKED ON. Keeping track of everything feels like an unfun version of Papers Please. I get that Talisman is an old board game that is unapologetically "Ameritrash", but the fact that the game is so clunky made it that much more important to streamline the digital version.

Not feeling the dice

Foolwolf

Talisman is quite true to the tabletop renditions. The flipping of cards, the rolling dice sounds etc - but it doesn't quite make it without losing some of the feeling by trying too much. The game itself is infuriating. You can get soo pissed with it and shake your fists, pull your hair - and have just one more go at that really difficult task. In the end, this is a game made to play with others, on your own it will be dull pretty quick. If you have friends, it may very well be a few fun hours of gaming now and then. Me - I think I will go look for the real table top version instead.

I swear, if one of you steals my pack mule one more time...

midgetjacks

I'm gonna get this right out of the way, I think Talisman is a bad game. So why the high score? Well, it's complicated, almost in that way that only Avril Lavigne can express. If I'm sitting down at a table to play a game that's going to last a few hours, Talisman is one of the last games I'd want to play. It takes forever, there's lots of cards and things to juggle that just drag it out further, you're basically rolling the dice and then maybe rolling them again, and it's really easy for the game to become lopsided due to some bad luck. With that being said, I will gladly play this version. Okay, maybe gladly is the wrong term. It abuses me, over and over again, yet I keep coming back. Maybe one day I'll win, I think, maybe one day I will be the one stealing everything from everyone else. I, of course, am always wrong. The reason I keep coming back is that while the game part is limited, playing with friends creates stories. Once I was the worst knight ever, incapable of defeating simple thugs, but could gamble like no other, unless I was getting in fights with drunken farmers, and losing. Or another time I was a priest, or maybe a monk, I can't remember. But anyway, as this holy character, I spent half the game within sight of the monastery where I began, losing repeatedly to a dastardly boar. I've been turned into a toad countless times by a shady vendor who deals in spin-the-wheel type magic. And I have never been able to hold onto a pack mule for longer than three turns before having it stolen. Every game creates a new, strange, but always memorable character story, if you let it. If you want a balanced game, you should look somewhere else. If you're looking for something skill based, this will infuriate you, over and over again. But if you have a few hours to kill, and some friends to play with, and want to have a dumb romp through a fantasy setting while rejoicing in the highs of having everything come up shiny, or swearing as your big, bold knight fails to slay a lethargic giant rat, this just might be what you're looking for.

Not Quite Hearthstone But Good Enough

Sciazs

As per the title, if you're in the same position as I am, eagerly and anxiously waiting for your Hearthstone beta key, then this game is the one for you to tide things over. The game has some great gameplay and none any cards feels overpowered in anyway. This game brings a total nostalgia feel reminiscent of my days playing Magic the Gathering, though not as in-depth but equally satisfying and fun nonetheless. The price may be a bit of a stretch for some but for fans of the genre, this is definitely a great catch.
