One of the shining examples of how Kickstarter can bring a game to life that otherwise wouldn't have seen the light of day. This game is for all those enthusiasts of side-scrolling, puzzle, action, light platforming games of yore like Out of the World and Flashback. It's a perfect homage to those aforementioned games. Intriguing and engaging story with realistic dialogue and teaser flavor text, great pixel art, atmospheric music, controller support. I am really pleasantly surprised with the way this game turned out. It's not all peaches and cream though. The controls are much better and tighter than they were in alpha and beta, but still leave something to be desired. I chalk it up to the somewhat stiff ledge-climbing animations, amongst others. Some puzzle/platforming sections are harder than they should be because of it. Personally, I don't mind, but I can imagine it annoying some. Also, while I love the puzzle designs for the most part (forgetting that overplayed pipe dream puzzle), their lack of direction may be disconcerting for newer players. Fret not though and stick with it. So far, they can all be solved by a fair bit of logic. $15 for a 90's era game from an unknown developer may be wishful thinking. My hope is that it becomes something of a sleeper hit or cult classic. If it drops to $12, then I encourage you to take the plunge, but for gamers like myself, it's a no-brainer.
The Way is the Another World spiritual successor we've been waiting for! From playing the game, I would say that a gamepad or anything with dual analog sticks is almost a necessity for this game. There are certain parts of the game that are almost unbeatable with the keyboard and require analog sticks. This is because some levels require so much control over your movement that keyboards simply cannot keep up. Luckily, this means the game experience is one that requires you to be on your toes throughout the game. I found myself enjoying mechanics like the regular flips between twitch action and those lull moments when you're just planning how to beat the level. The puzzle difficulty is quite demanding, but it never felt unfair or even unreasonably taxing. The visual design is quite beautiful. Although it is not quite as smooth as Another World's flat plane. However, I don't find that I mind the shift to painted pixels at all because they're beautiful and used to great visual effect. The game took only about ten hours for me to beat and I enjoyed every second of it. It's really the game for all fans of Another World!
