Heroic Adventures in Medieval Germany
Deep in the twilight of the Black Forest, you and your companions crouch before the robber-knight's tower. Hans, the alchemist, places his mysterious potion by the door. Ebhard the friar implores Saint Dunstan to bless your weapons and armor. And you and Gretchen grip naked long swords, praying your plate mail won't squeak.
With a thundery crash, the door explodes into fragments! You charge inside, swords and maces swinging. One guard falls beneath the power of your blade... then two more! You storm upstairs to the second floor, but there to greet you is Erhard the Red Wolf, the infamous robber-knight, surrounded by his henchmen. Hans tosses a choking potion into their faces and you quickly charge into the fray. The room echoes with the clash of steel on steel... it's a battle to the death in the Black Forest!

Darklands is a great game with an excellent setting that combines a realistic 15th century German with German folklore. It is mostly a sandbox game where you create a party and are dropped into a random town. When creating a character you can choose different skills and a family background which will all have different effects, having a more skilled character means that they start out at an older age and can die more easily over time and will be weaker. It's a very non linear game with elements that are rarely seen in other games, losing a fight to guards can have yo imprisoned and require you to escape from the law, losing to thieves can leave you alive but with all your supplies stolen, and the game combines choose your own adventure text segments with overworld exploration and combat maps. Combat is done in a mixture of real time and pause gameplay with different tactics that can be used depending on the enemies you are facing, your characters can use a more defensive fighting style, try to break through the enemies defense, or can target weak points in armor. The game requires some trial and error, as is common with games of the time, as not everything is explained well nor is it well balanced, and you can run into bugs and glitches. Well worth checking out though.
Some games are way ahead of their times. Darklands is one of such games, that despite its age of over 20 years is not only still playable, but also enjoyable and more interesting than many new RPGs. In the time of its release it was one of the most impressive RPGs with its open world, based on historical Germany, many options, missions, quests, paths and secrets. The background itself is very interesting, as it's a mix of historical Germany with some religious elements and magic/alchemy. Your characters earn new skills and improve their stats, but also age - which is not without impact on their statline. Just think how innovative it must have been! Now the game looks like a cheap mobile game, as its graphics and audio are far behind the standards of today, but if you haven't known this game before it's good to see the game to which modern RPGs owe so much.
