Space of Darkness is a survival horror game, taking place on a hijacked spaceship where you are the last survivor.
You must try to find the last "rescue capsule," but it will not be easy. On the spaceship you will need XP, a way to get to the "rescue capsule," and the temperature system will need to be reactivated!
A beautiful journey to another universe, but you are not alone once the the adventure leads to a seemingly small bump. Robot aliens come to the conquer the spaceship – the crew is dead! Can you escape? You must find a way to rescue capsule and save yourself...
Space of Darkness is more or less inspired by System Shock and Prey, problem being not having the same quality or budget as those games had. Graphics are incredibly simplistic and cartoony, however I have a soft-spot for those early 2000s 3D graphics and it reminds me of all those plastic games like Project Snowblind. The biggest problem with this game is that there is barely any content and nothing actually promising about it. Plot is something done to death, sound is meh, gameplay is shallow and there is barely any content in it to talk about - it is more like a tech demo or maybe not even that. More like a sale-pitch, just something to get the budget. In under 90 minutes you will see everything this game has to offer. Overall, while the price looks really low, there is no excuse for it to be this shallow or lacking any content. In my opinion dev should've finished the game first and then release it, instead of just releasing tech demo with nothing interesting to offer.
The name and description of Space of Darkness should serve as a warning about the game's quality. It is a survival game in that you have to manage your health, hunger, and stamina while aboard a spaceship. The graphics and sound are extremely poor, weapons will just float in front of your screen and awkwardly swing forward when you attack, you might clip through the walls, there is little instruction about what you are doing with certain things just telling you to get more XP. I'm not sure where the jump scares are or why you would advertise your poor atmosphere and need of jump scares as a positive feature. This was just thrown unfinished onto Steam and even if it continues to get updates is not going to be worth trying.
Nowadays, survival-horror games have become something of a trend. You'll see many famous YouTubers horrified reactions entertaining their many fans. However, that requires the game to be genuinely scary, and Space of Darkness lacks that crucial aspect. Yes, the game has jump scares, but the XP system and boss fights take away the horror that this game could have provided. The sounds and colours also don't do a very good job at creating an eerie atmosphere. Nonetheless, the game is playable and can provide some fun, but as a horror game it falls flat on its face.
