I'll quickly repeat what others said: This is a GTA with less emphasis on weapons and more emphasis on hand-to-hand combat. You'll be spending the majority of fights parrying attacks and inflicting bone-breaking moves on gangmembers (or police!). The story line had me actually intrigued, and the voice acting is fantastic. The cantonese that you casually hear as you walk about, as well as the immersive graphics depicting the urban jungle of Hong Kong (?) really pull you into character. Personally have had more fun with Sleeping Dogs than any other game in it's Genre (GTA and Saint's Row included) When the price of the game drops below $5, it's a no brainer.
This game will have you playing it over and over again and yes while it is not a GTA game you will have fun going around town fighting people with martial arts, racing and be connected with the other characters in the game just like it was one of those hong kong gangster/cop movies. I have owned this game when it first came out and at least once every 3 weeks i find myself starting up this game starting all over and just enjoying the game itself in general and really you don't need to be online to play something so great.
I can't believe that I didn't play this game sooner. Like others have said before me, it is GTA w/ an Asian protagonist and the melee is not restricted to haymakers and big boots. Driving is a bit wonky, but the action and story is steady and well placed. The voice acting is great, and the locale is a breath of fresh air from the metropolis of big city. Pick it up!
Positives: + Good graphics. The city lights of Hong Kong, shadows and rain effects are truly well done. + Awesome Kung Fu melee combat, with a plethora of different moves. + Interesting storyline and some of the best missions I've played in this sort of game genre. + Open World exploration and cool activities (DLC packs add more). + Triad and Cop skill tree where you gain new abilities or Kung Fu moves when you level up. Additional martial arts training for collecting rare jade statues. + Really cool shooting and firefights towards the end of the game. Negatives: - Bad controls for PC. You can't bind arrow keys for movement at all. I don't use the wasd keys and I know many others don't either. There's so many keys to press in combat it can take quite some time to become fluent at the game. The complexity of the combat, sprinting and cover system is a double-edged sword. While it results in great chase scenes, acrobatics and sweet Kung Fu action, it requires the use of many keys, and often it doesn't quite work as intended. The controls could have been implemented better. - Mouse sensitivity cannot be adjusted in options.. - No difficulty setting. Why? This is basic game design. - Minor problem with car handling when driving, although nothing major. - Camera for reversing in vehicles is terrible and doesn't work conventionally like a game such as GTA IV. Sleeping Dogs is a great game. Even with all the negatives, I absolutely loved the storyline and epic missions towards the end. It could have been 9/10, but the controls pull it down slightly. The fact the developers weren't dedicated or interested enough to port it to PC properly from consoles means the game deserves a lower score than what it could have had. There are brutal Kung Fu fights, with amazing missions, nice cutscenes and lovely, detailed environments.
Don't rush the main story. Once it's over, you'll feel empty on the inside. This is like the genre of Grand Theft Auto meets the importance of a story in the way only Square Enix can deliver. Maybe it's just because the grass is always greener on the other side, but I wish this was bigger, and I wish they hadn't ditched the sequel. I'm emotionally attached to Wei Shen. Anyways, If you love to use Chinese Martial Art in an open world game like a boss, This game totally suits you.
