Imperator Rome Key Details - Game Overview, System Requirements, Trailers & More

They say all roads lead to Rome, but in Paradox’s latest grand strategy Imperator Rome that’s not quite true. Imperator Rome’s world map is that of a forgotten globe, full of dead countries and borders long-since eradicated and redrawn. It’s an incredibly deep rendition of the classical era, from the tip of Carthage in modern-day northwest Africa all the way to what’s now China. And you’re in charge of one of these empires, among many. A game of huge depth and complexity, then - let’s break it down a bit.

Game Overview

Despite the name, Imperator Rome isn’t singularly about the Roman empire. It begins around 400 years after the foundation of Rome, and that means plenty of fascinating history is happening in Western Europe at the time, but there’s also a lot going on in Africa and across Asia, with Egypt, Phrygia, Maurya and others all establishing themselves as early superpowers.

Using the Paradox Clausewitz engine which previously powered Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings and Hearts of Iron titles, Imperator Rome offers grand strategy fans the chance to change the face of history. Will you take charge of one of Rome’s neighbours and thwart its advances? Or perhaps venture further afield into present day Asia and unite the territories of the Indian subcontinent? Maybe you’d rather guide the Macedon empire to ascendancy throughout Europe and Asia - the beauty of Imperator Rome is that it’s a sandbox. You can take it in whichever direction you wish, and you’ll find vast detail and an obvious love for the period’s history whatever you choose to do.

In its nuts and bolts, Imperator Rome is a game about managing resources and using them to stabilise and grow and empire. Those resources are:

  • Manpower
  • Currency
  • Civic power
  • Religious power
  • Oratory power

By gathering these resources and spending them wisely, you’re able to expand your borders - through diplomacy or force.
