The Battlefield franchise has had a long and illustrious career. Large scale warfare, vehicular combat and epic set pieces have always been at the centre of all Battlefield games. Over the years the franchise has redefined the FPS genre and has brought millions of players those classic Battlefield moments. But what are the best Battlefield games? It’s a fairly hot topic with everyone all preferring their own thing. That being said, we’re going to take a look at some of the top Battlefield games we’ve had the pleasure of playing in anticipation of the October 22nd release for Battlefield 2042.
Battlefield: Bad Company
Battlefield: Bad Company felt like a real switch up in the series. We got to see destruction on a whole new level. A fantastically fun campaign that was a real joy ride from start to finish. Bad Company felt like Battlefield had been given a new lease on life and brought the game more to the mainstream.
Battlefield 1942
I think if you asked many Battlefield fans which game in the franchise held the most nostalgia then 1942 would probably be at the top of many of those lists. Sure, it wasn’t the best Battlefield game but it helped paved the way for the future. This is where Battlefield really got its identity as a game with massive large scale battles both on land and in the sky. It hasn’t aged well but it still holds a special place in our gaming hearts.
Battlefield 1
Battlefield 1 was a bold step and it divided opinions hugely. At the time World War 1 games were a little scarce or niche, so making one of the biggest FPS franchises go back to that era was a risky choice. Ultimately it was a risk that paid off. Battlefield 1 is a truly stunning game. It was dark, gritty and at times brutal. More importantly, it still kept those signature BF moments whilst delivering additional innovations and new gameplay experiences.
Battlefield 3
BF3 could just as easily be at the top spot for Battlefield games ranked. Battlefield 3 was a real high point in the franchise. It wasn’t the perfect game, but it represented a game that offered so much potential, so many oppourtunities to have a stupid amount of fun playing with your friends and strangers.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Take Battlefield: Bad Company and make it better in almost every single way. That’s what Bad Company 2 ended up being. There won’t be many out there that don’t think that BC 2 is the best in the series. The game gave us unashamed tongue in cheek fun. It gave us big fights, loads of vehicles and a bunch of weapons to mess around with. It was simply peak Battlefield fun. We started to see what the Frostbite engine could really do with almost all buildings to flatten in multiplayer matches. The maps would look completely different at the end of a match compared to the start. It had everything players could have wanted from both single player and multiplayer perspectives.
With Battlefield 2042 on the horizon, let’s hope we can continue to see ground breaking gameplay experiences that deliver heaps of amazing Battlefield moments.
