SimCity was pretty darn good, and while this game draws much inspiration and similarities with SimCity, it would kind of be unfair to judge it by those standards. Because it's not a bad game. Unfortunately, there are some who find it hard to associate city building sims with anything else but SimCity. In that regard we see the influence SimCity has had on this genre. Cities XXL is good in terms of gameplay, and features an incredible variety of buildings and structures. Technically, there are those issues people have been talking about. But even then, the game runs pretty okay. You're sure to get a good number of hours on this game.
If you read the reviews on Steam the game is getting terrible ratings... however it's not a terrible game... the issue is that it's basically the exact same game that Cities XL was. Unlike the other reviewer I disagree about the performance, in fact I'd seriously wonder if he's talking about Cities XL. The only real improvement from any other game in this series is that they optimized the engine to work on modern hardware and not the game finally runs well - at least on my gaming desktop. In the past the game would come to a halt when the cities got too big, that is no longer the case at all. Also this game now has Steamworks integration so hopefully an active mod community will do the job the devs did not do. If you own the previous games then its easily not worth the $40 asking pricing. Even the $20 upgrade offer from Steam isn't a good deal for buying the same game that runs better. If you've never played this series then disregard the negative scores. It's a fun city building game and the cities can get huge. The controls stink compared to SimCity, but they still work. The main issue is the price, when you can get the XL version of the game for much much less, and its the same game except it runs worse, well its hard to justify the full cost. But with the game running better and the easy Steamworks integration, well this is the best version of this game. But don't be shocked when its onsale for $5 in 3 weeks.
Cities XXL is a city-building game that has drawn many comparisons to the famed series, SimCity. It does have many similar mechanics to SimCity such as zoning, road-building, and economy management. Graphics are fairly impressive, but not great. The main issue that plagues the game is technical problems. When zooming out during zoning, the frame rate just absolutely tanks to an abysmal 10 to 4 frames. There is the occasional corrupted save files, which is a pain to attempt to recover the original file (usually doesn't work) The gameplay is great, but the technical issues aren't so as great. Proceed with caution.
