Dead Rising 2 Off The Record is a non canonical alternate history version of the main game. The main character Chuck Green is replaced by the hero of the first game, Frank West. With the addition of a new main character all of the cutscenes are changed to fit the character, most of the plot is the same but there are some changes with character motivations and what happens at the end of the game. There aren't any major changes to the gameplay other than the return of the ability to take pictures and a new boss enemy in the form of Chuck Green taking the place of another boss, though the fight plays out in a similar way. If you enjoyed the original game this will likely be enjoyable to play through, with enough changes to remain interesting.
Deadrising 2 was an already wonderful game, and with Off the Record, the developers really brought into the world the best zombie sandbox of all time. I can not recommend this game enough, it's replayability is nearly limitless and it still holds up even by today's standards. I give this game a perfect score because it truly lives up to every expectation there may be. Despite Deadrisings 3 and 4, this is still the ultimate Deadrising game there is. Buying this game will not disappoint you.
Have in mind that this review is made from the point of view of someone who already played the original Dead Rising 2. Just not worth it if you already have the original one. Off the Record looks more like a DLC with a new character than a whole new game. It's almost like paying 20? for a skin in the same city from the previous one. Not even bother the story since this game or any other Dead Rising game just don't care about it. The game is fun, but just as fun as the original one. Off the Record adds nothing to the good old gameplay, and works fine as your first Dead Rising but not as your second or third one.
DR2 Off the Record is for all intents and purposes a re-skin of Dead Rising 2 with Frank West from the first game replacing Chuck Green of the second. There were a few additional combo weapons thrown in such as the Protoman Suit and thankfully some of the more glaring balancing issues were fixed. For example, Frank is able to dodge-roll from the start rather than having to learn it a few hours in and likely cause you to lose several times and restart the game. I didn't have to do that at any point here, which gave the gameplay a plus. In addition, there are also some new bosses not in DR2 that make callbacks to the first Dead Rising such as Evan MacIntyre (brother of Adam, the chainsaw juggling clown). Though admittedly the reskin idea comes in full force when one boss has the exact same glitches as in DR2. While the game is solid, I will say that the penultimate boss is...well, They're absurd. In an attempt to create a twist on Dead Rising 2's story- *SPOILER ALERT* The main villain turns out to be Stacy the zombie rights activist who is actually a pharmaceutical rep in disguise who caused the outbreak to frame the zombie rights group and harvest the wasps to make more Zombrex for people bitten but unturned. Huh, Capcom has a real problem with pharmaceutical companies, don't they? But that's not the absurd part. That actually makes some B-Movie sense. The absurdity is her fight. You fight her as she pilots a theme park ride she apparently modified to have missile launchers and giant grabbing claws all in the time of the outbreak, which would be less than 3 days. The worst part is her fight requires some very obnoxious QTEs that will require a restart of that round if you fail one. *END SPOILERS* Her boss fight aside, I actually prefer Off the Record to the original DR2. Frank makes more sense to have become jaded and making bad puns when someone gets killed in front of him, the camera is back for extra points, and if you get the complete edition the extra clothes offer for some fun in game dress-ups and bonuses. The BBQ chef outfit in particular is a fun one as it turns condiments into deadly weapons. Highly recommended if you like Dead Rising 2 but don't feel the need to play the exact same story again or if you prefer Frank West to Chuck Green.
Set in the same time period than Dead Rising 2, Off The Record is a complete game focusing on Frank West, hero of the original Dead Rising, and now fighting for his life in the slaughterhouse that Fortune City just turned into. The content is completly new. New story, new bosses, new weapons, new survivors. Only the world map remains the same. There is not much to say about Off The Record. It's the improved version of Dead Rising 2 so it's must have for all Zombicide fans out there!
