Reviews for FINAL FANTASY® XIV: A Realm Reborn™

I felt a little bit lost, and I think it's my fault

I keep trying Final Fantasy games again and again. I love the music, the visuals, but I'm not good at it. I felt lost at the beginning, and it's normal because my FF knowledge is: Vaan, Penelo, Chocobo, repeat. I'll give it another try in the near future and probably update my review (if I don't fail again!)

An updated review

With the new expansion looming just over the horizon, and given how old and out of date most of the reviews are on here I decided a new one was in order. So first, the cons, as there are way less than the pros: Yes, the combat and general systems of the game are still the same. If you don't like traditional MMO combat then this might not be the game for you (then again, with all of the side content and crafting you could honestly spend months in this game not even touching PvE). PvP is still lacking for the most part. Which we have received new larger scale PvP in the form of battlegrounds, PvP in general is still mostly a minor focus for the dev team as they've stated multiple time. However with the expansion, they have said they're going to look at further fleshing the PvP systems out, so might be good to keep an eye on that. And now the Pros: Story/Immersion in this game, which somewhat stilted at release, has become an entirely different beast after a year of content. Unlike many other MMO companies who's cutscenes or events start to feel same-y after a while, the developers of XIV:ARR continuously tinkered with and learned to manipulate their in-engine lighting and models/terrain with every content patch, leading to some of the most fluid and interested cutscenes I've seen in an MMO world to date. No CGI mind you, this is all in-engine assets they're using. Same goes for the many voice actors in the game, which they may have been a bit still or bland to begin with, as content released you can hear them falling more and more into their characters. The world itself is beautiful and amazing, too. The game juggles a significant amount of side plots at any given time, even leading up to the expansion, and never once drops one of them and forgets it. It genuinely feels like a world that's moving on with or without you. The diversity (and more importantly ease of access) of content in this game astounds me as someone who only has a limited number of hours per day to play this game. For casual players there's a myriad of dungeons, low-tier raids, side quest lines and crafting choices available that will last for months upon months regardless of how much time you put in. For hardcore players with limited time, Raiding is super accessible here. Rather than have a single raid instance where you fight every boss in a row, each boss is it's own individual instance. Only want to fight boss 3? Then you only have to fight boss 3. And for hardcore players with lots of time, there's the same Raiding but with harder difficulty levels, as well as Extreme Trial (single boss, no trash) fights and so on. The community in this game has to be one of the most mature and friendly MMO communities I've seen in my years playing them. From vanilla WoW, to games like RIFT, Aion, Terra, GW2, Wildstar and more, none of them have had this level of equality to them. Elitism is rarely spotted, as in the public those types of players are generally shunned by most parties/groups, and so they tend to keep to their own private raid groups and Free Companies (guilds). Simply asking for help, whether it's in a city or a dungeon, will 9/10 times yield a favourable answer, and it's not uncommon for max level players to be running low-level dungeons for reasons and to have them teach newer players boss fights and such. That and the Reddit is still growing and is VERY well moderated. All in all, while at launch I would have agreed with most of the assessments here, FFXIV:ARR has become so much more in just a years time. Now with the Heavensward expansion coming in June, as well as the DX11 client, we can expect even greater things to come. It's hard to argue with the number of subscribers too, as they're still climbing to this day be they PC, PS3 or PS4 players. Speaking of which, as this game is just a sub of SE themselves and are only working on this project, it's clear to see our sub money is going back into this game given the sheer amount of content we're receiving at such a steady pace. Any other pay model would simply ruin what this game has managed to build up for itself. So, if you don't mind not having PvP and you're fine with traditional MMO combat, this is one of the best examples of this genre done right in many years. No gimmicks, no "Action Combat" leaving bad ping players useless, just pure MMO goodness. 9/10 - Will continue to sub.

Only if you are in to FF

From the perspective of a veteran MMO player, FFXIV is nothing special. After reaching level cap I quit due to the fact that it was so samey. The story is what holds the game up, and is the main reason that I stuck with it for so long. I would say if you are a Final Fantasy fan you will like this game quiet a bit.

Refreshing, beautiful, and a little grindy

FFXIV: A Realm Reborn is a Square Enix reboot of its failed former foray back into the MMORPG scene. Its earlier iteration was a mess of bugs, missing features, and an altogether incomplete game that played like a labor of love endured by only the most hardcore FF fans. FFXIV: ARR has fixed the vast majority of issues that existed in its earlier incarnation. It is a solid MMO that any adherent to theme park MMO's such as WoW, SWTOR, or RIFT will find familiar and comfortable. It is by no means a groundbreaking originator in the genre. Those who enjoy Final Fantasy as a franchise will surely find their money well spent in the world of Eorzea. The levelling is streamlined and a smooth hand-holding experience. Quests are the usual fare in MMO settings - fetch quests, kill X of creature Y, and escorts. But the quality of the quests and lore behind them can reach the level of excitement and intrigue I have not experienced for quite a while in other MMO's. The instances are interesting and have some creative mechanics for boss encounters and trash alike. The endgame is challenging and expanding with each update. The game seems to get better with each patch.

Great If You Are a FF Fan..

Ahh Final Fantasy, a name that brings back nostalgia to long time gamers like myself. In this Exciting 14th (Not Technically, but roll with it..) Installation we get a new online experience that is far from perfect, but still carries the Square Enix name. In FF 14 A Realm Reborn you choose your class, follow the story, max your class and become bored. Yes you can join guilds and create other classes as well. They story itself is decent and planned out. But the missions are ridiculous. The crafting is horrible. You have to change classes in order to craft certain items that are purchasable anyway.. If you aren't a fan of Final Fantasy, there are other MMO's out there that are a better use of your money. But sadly for me, I'm a long time Square Enix guy and have to pay. For Graphics and Story detail I give the game a 8/10. But for the price, battles system, crafting and anything else that should be good on a MMO this game gets a 6/10.
