Age of Wonders is a strategy game with a greater focus on the premade campaign maps than most games of this style, it ends up with more interesting lore but lacks the randomness that can make similar games more replayable. Like Master of Magic, your ruler will be able to cast powerful spells to aid your armies on the map and your territories, they can participate in battle but later on that will often be better left to your armies and possible heroes you can acquire. When forces meet the game will switch to a turn based hex battle system where you will command your forces. Cities can be captured and dungeons explored for rewards. The map will include hills, mountains, rivers, etc and spells can allow armies to pass over previously impassable terrain on the world map. A good game when it released back in 1999 and still an enjoyable game now, though the sequels have improved on things.
