Underrated gem

A stealth RPG game featuring third person shooter elements or... almost everything out there, since there are lots of ways to play this underrated game. You can go berserk and kill everyone or you can become a shadow and sneak in to reach your objectives. No matter how you do it, you'll enjoy this game a lot. But there's even more in Alpha Protocol. Remember how fan was to dialogue in Mass Effect (actually even more fun than playing the game)? Well, Alpha Protocol has a lot of that and also choices matter. Alpha Protocol gets better every time you play it, exactly when you realize the amount of consequences in the game resulting from your actions. This game deserved way more attention than it had.

Badly ported, badly made -- Obsidian

This is your typical Obsidian game. Romance sub-plots, an iffy story with a lot of dialogue options, and RPG system where "progression" simply unlocks things that should have been there to begin with, and worst of all, masses of bugs. The stealth in this game is honestly the absolute worst i've ever seen in a game. It's repetitive, dull, the AI is awful, and worst of all, the "stealth tree" is ridiculously overpowered. The first skill in the game that you unlock tells you where everyone around you is, and an arrow shows you what direction their view is facing. Other abilities make you invisible, make you invisible when you're spotted, make you semi-invisible, or just make you impossible to see. "Stealth" is really "invisibility and wallhacks". Then you've got the trademark Obsidian crashes, bugs and glitches which, once again, they tried to blame on the publisher -- just like with KotoR II and New Vegas. There's a reason Alpha Protocol didn't see much success. The story is atrocious, the characters are unlikable and uninteresting, the game mechanics are repetitive, and the game world is linear.

Alpha and Omega

Some people say that Alpha Protocol is what the Mass Effect franchise should have been as a RPG with TPS mechanics. While I really like Mass Effect 2 and 3, I must confess that yes there is a difference here in Alpha Protocol. In terms of interactivity with the story, Alpha Protocol gives a much better feeling of control. You really have the impression that your actions and decisions have effects on the game scenario. You must make hard decision and the brilliant story makes it even better. Unfortunately that’s where the game’s quality ends. The shooting gameplay feels clunky. The AI is not that great and the visuals are decent at best. Alpha Protocol is a very fun game but it feels like a missed opportunity.

An RPG done right.....well almost

'Mass Effect' and 'Splinter Cell' had a child named 'Alpha Protocol'. It turned out to be a flawed genius. There are a lot of faults with this game. Broken gameplay mechanics, PS2-era graphics, inconsistent frame-rates and an uninspired beginning. But if one can look past its many shortcomings, this game turns out to be an absolute gem. A global espionage-RPG in the true sense. To start things off, you first pick your characters class: Soldier (firearms), Field Agent (stealth), Tech Specialists (hacking) or Freelancer (a combination of skills of the player's choice). Each class determines how well you perform a specific task in the field. With regards to gameplay, I'm sure the devs were targeting a realistic approach to combat. For instance, you have to aim at a target for few seconds to let the reticule converge. Thus, ensuring that every gunfight turned out to be a challenge. The melee system comprised of martial arts which allowed you to knockout enemies either stealthily or engage them head-on. All character abilities were upgradeable with sufficient experience points (XP). Hacking was one of the highlights of the game. There was a unique system in place each for hacking computers, opening locks or bypassing keypads and alarms. Many people found the hacking system frustrating but I think it was fairly straight-forward. Challenging, yes, but very rewarding in the end. The graphics were rubbish, plain and simple. Character animations were clunky, anti-aliasing horrible, lighting awful, movements jerky and texture loading very slow. These were some of the biggest down-sides of an otherwise fantastic game. Level designs were very good though with plenty of alternative routes to complete objectives. The plot is where this game really shines. The story is gripping and opens up once you're done with the Saudi missions. And it hurtles you head-first into a global conspiracy mess. Allies (and enemies) are made along the way and your treatment of them has future implications in the form of gaining intel, weapons, money (if allies) or facing problems and hurdles (if enemies). Reading their dossier in advance helps you choose favourable options during dialogue sequences. Characters are interesting and unlike many other RPG games, dialogue never feels bland. Alpha Protocol needs a sequel to set its problems right. It requires perseverance and patience to overlook its many problems and bear with its frustrating nature but underneath all that, this game is a true gem. One not to be missed.

Great stealth RPG

The title says it all. Alpha Protocol is one of the games out there, which are way too underrated. At first I had one serious problem with it too. Mouse lagging. Hated it. The game looked fun but I couldn't handle it because sometime the character just turned some way else I wanted him to. I managed to decrease it somehow and started the story. Loved it. First of all the game gives you many time the chance to do evil or good things. That's not new, other games use it too, yet I don't really care about such. If something works, and does it well, why change it? This title offers you nice and various scenery all around the globe. Plus never forget that you are an awesome spy with the ability to choose and upgrade your character's skills, buy weapons and take down enemies using your hands only. That's pretty awesome isn't it? And it's a nicely done stealth game, a genre, the one that needs to be kept alive (yes there are some other titles but I won't be angry if more and more come out). If you ask me, Alpha Protocol is a must have one, and guys being taken over by a german cougar named SIE, that's hot!
