This is the first Legacy of Kain game I played all the way through. The gothic world looks and feels awesome, the citizens have personality, and the environment is brutal and foreboding. Kain is a very deep and interesting character, and his story, to me, is just as essential to the series as Raziel's. The combat is where this game shines to me. The Soul Reaver is a blast to dice fools up with, and Kain's powers, including immolation, mist form, and charm (mind control) are all fun to utilize in combat as well as stealth and puzzle solving situations. It's often forgotten about, but I believe Blood Omen 2 is as essential and enjoyable as any game in the series.
In spite of its name, Blood Omen 2 is not a direct sequel to Kain's original quest. Well yeah... Your goal is to conquer Nosgoth but no, it's not exacly a sequel. Blood Omen 2 shall be played after Soul Reaver 2 for Raziel time travels made this game's story possible. As Kain, you must fight your way through the great city of Meridian. Your objective is to defeat the Sarafan Lord, the last thing between you and Nosgoth throne. Not as good as the other games, Blood Omen 2 is still decent and fun and its mandatory to understand the whole saga's plot.
Third entry in the Legacy of Kain saga, Soul Reaver 2 offers a new quest for the player : to travel back in time to different era of Nosgoth bloody history. You will meet the most iconic characters of the Lore and fight the Sarafan order in another action/adventure game. Still puzzle-driven, your adventure might seem too close of the previous game. However, Soul Reaver 2 remains a great game and fascinating adventure.
I think the greatest praise I can give this game is that it has managed to not age too badly. Kain's character has some excellent dialogue, and the game's setting has a surprising amount of depth, given its linearity. The combat can get a little rinse-and-repeat, but the the series's staple use of enemy weapons can keep things reasonably fresh. The puzzles are also quite straightforward, but I felt they were there more for pacing than to provide a real intellectual challenge, so in that sense they work well. I would say for the price it is going for these days, this game is good value for money, and worth your time.
