Codename: Panzers Phase one

Codename: Panzers is an incredible real-time strategy thrill ride. Nerves of steel are required when you're a tank driver - One direct hit and you're done for -- but you must throw yourself into the battle, because without your support, many will die.

Reviews for Codename: Panzers Bundle

Great RTS for those looking for an alternative to Company of Heroes

Codename Panzers, Phase One is a WWII RTS that was originally released in 2004. The game includes three lengthy campaigns that can keep you busy for some time, these campaigns will allow you to control the Russian, German, and US forces with some occasional uses of the British forces. For the time the game looks very good and has some good effects when it comes to environment destruction. Your forces are kept fairly small and they gain experience as you use them, allowing you to micromanage your forces more in order to keep them alive and to make sure you are using the types of units that work best in any given situation. You are able to purchase new units in between missions by spending the prestige points that you earn by completing main and secondary mission objectives. The game is a mixture of realism and fictional elements in order to give units more balance. You will see some features that most will know from Company of Heroes, infantry squads can kill the crews of certain weapons and then make use of them and you can cause vehicle crews to bail out to acquire more vehicles. Vehicles will have different armour ratings depending on which side you are hitting them on, infantry units will drop to take cover, and off map artillery support can be called in. If you are looking for a good RTS with some similarities to Company of Heroes this is probably one that will interest you. Codename Panzers, Phase Two released shortly after Phase One and it focuses more on adding new content instead of fixing what was, for the most part, not broken. Phase Two includes three new campaigns that allows you to play as the Italians, Yugoslav partisans, and the US forces. One of the problems with the Phase One, and a problem with many older RTS games, still exists in this title, which is that tanks are so much better than your other options and that you are given little reason to use much infantry. Like the previous game, your units will improve over time so you will want to keep them alive, and prestige points gained from missions can be used to buy replacement units or to upgrade old ones. The only new thing added that I don't like is the bland desert maps which tend to make tanks even more powerful without having areas and building for infantry to use as cover. If you enjoyed Phase One you will very likely enjoy Phase Two. Codename Panzers Cold War is likely going to be less impressive than the other two games, both because it was released a few years after and did little to improve on things and you are going to find less units and missions. If you are looking for a good WWII RTS alternative to company of heroes these are games you should probably check out.
