Game description

There’s something new in the air, and it’s more than the hum of hundreds of aero engines... As the Luftwaffe launches its aerial offensive, the outnumbered Royal Air Force is scrambling to bring into combat new planes that will ensure victory over a stronger foe. Will they succeed? It’s up to you, and your Hurricane or Spitfire. If you hold off the enemy long enough, you’ll be the first to fly the Hawker Tornado and Westland Whirlwind into combat, and enable the Empire to strike back before Reichsmarschall Goering finishes his breakfast. You’ll be rewarded with bonus missions, promotions, decorations, and a view of burning Berlin from the tail turret of a Halifax bomber.

Join in the new Battle of Britain. Your aircraft is ready and waiting...

Mediocre flight sim

This game is a decent try at flight simulation. Not spectacular success, but you get what you pay for after all ;) Getting the joystick or flying stick to respond the way you want takes a lot of tweaking and and poor in-game options and customization does not help with it. The voice narrativeyou get before and especially (!!!) during the missions is unnecessary and doesn't help the game because a lot of stuff in the voice narrative just doesn't need to be said. It only deconcentrate you. The game sadly falls flat in gameplay as well, even compared to later DOS titles like Aces of the Pacific, not to mention new titles. For this price you may as well get it if flight sims are your thing, but don't expect too much.

It's alright

Combat Wings is an admittedly great value per dollar. it has pretty impressive controls and action. The graphics aren't amazing, but it's highly detailed. Most of all, it's a fun aerial dog-fighting game, and there haven't been many in recent years. It's a bit lacking in content, but for its low price and being part of a pretty thin genre, it's definitely worthwhile.

Smooth Flying For This One

It doesn't look like much at first, but it gives you a fair amount of content for a game priced as such. It's a really, really decent dogfight game, and I wish that more games could be this simple and yet offer so much. Controls were very manageable, the enemies were a challenge without being too overbearing, and the areas you fight in look great. It's not the most graphically stunning of fighter plane games, but this does a well and good job to be held up in their level. All in all, a great game that you should try.

More than you'd expect at this price.

I got this game on sale for $1.24, and obviously my expectations were pretty low. But after just a few short minutes of playing, and experiencing a full scale dogfight, I quickly realized this game has more to it than meets the eye. It's not the most polished game, and the physics probably aren't totally accurate, but it will provide many hours of fun gameplay, and it's the best bang for your buck if you're looking for a WWII flying game.

Not Bad

This low-cost combat flyer is a blast. The controls are smooth and intuitive and this lets you concentrate on flying and shooting instead of what buttons you need to press. In particular, the game makes such great use of the mouse that I'm not even tempted to try it with other controllers. Graphically, the game would have been mediocre even by the standards of 5 years before it came out. It can't be said to be a pretty game. But it plays so well, that I honestly don't care.
