Game description

Defense Grid 2, DG2, is the highly-anticipated sequel to Hidden Path Entertainment’s 2008 Defense Grid: The Awakening. Setting the bar as the definitive tower defense game, Defense Grid 2 introduces new worlds and threats to test your tower placement strategies. With a bold new look, a compelling single-player campaign, and the addition of new game modes, online player-versus-player and multiplayer co-op, every play-through brings fun new opportunities and challenges.

DG2 comes with a story campaign featuring 21 stunning maps, dynamic level movement, an expanded story and cast of characters, hundreds of challenge mode experiences, new multiplayer modes, a procedurally driven audio score and the ability for players to build their own levels. DG2 also introduces players to DG Architect, a level creation tool set connected to Steam Workshop where players can create their own unique levels to share and possibly even sell if selected.

DG2 for the PC was funded in part by Dracogen, a private investor after a 2012 Kickstarter campaign funded the original game's DLC, Defense Grid: Containment. DG2 is developed by Hidden Path Entertainment and published by 505 Games.

Great game BUT...

Taken on its own merits, Defense Grid 2 would stand out as an amazing Tower Defense game. Unfortunately, it's hard to not compare it to the original Defense Grid. DG1 stands out in my eyes as the gold standard of Tower Defense games. And in all honesty, between the Xbox 360 version and the Steam version I have somewhere around 1,000 hours of gameplay on it. Defense Grid 2 is so much more of the same but for some reason it seems not as good as the original. But for those who are fans of the original it's still highly recommended. Just be aware some changes you may not love, but it's still very much worth buying and playing. For those who haven't played the original, it is very much a better game (though I can't quite pinpoint why I feel that way)...but both games are definitely deserving to be in your gaming library, DG2 is a great game...it's just that DG1 was so amazing that it was going to be near impossible to top it with the sequel.

A Divisive Sequel

People complain when sequels don't change, but in all honesty they complain just as much when they do. That's precisely what Defense Grid 2 does: while it's still clearly part of the same universe, it feels very different from its predecessor. Whether or not these changes are good or bad is completely up to you. Because of that, be aware that enjoying the first game does not at all guarantee you will enjoy this one, nor vice versa. For the reasons detailed above, my review of this game is inevitably going to be biased, so keep that in mind as well. Many of the changes in the way the game technically works are fairly subtle, but overall the game as a whole feels like it's trying to go in two directions at once. Evident from the impressive and diverse voice cast, great care has been put into the game's story. At the same time, however, the gameplay itself is much more focused on high scores than anything else. Additionally, every level is unlocked from the start, and it is possible to complete a mission without earning any medals at all. These factors combine to give Defense Grid 2 the bizarre texture of an arcade game with rich storytelling.

Good game

Its Defense Grid, so if you liked it before then you'll like it now. The towers look different and there is some new mechanics to spice things up, but its the same thing: a solid and professionally made tower defense game.
