How much you like Front Mission Evolved depends directly on your expectation. Taken for itself it's a mediocre, schlocky and quite enjoyable Mech action game. If you have played the previous Front Mission games on the other hand you will be pretty disappointed. Looking back on this a few years later, you can see how much better Vanquish (action mech combat) or Armored Core (mech customization) are. If you just want to have a few ours of fun (playing on easy - I suck at these games - it took me 5-6 hours to finish) and enjoy B-movie stories (best part is probably the Bond style ending) then go ahead.
First time I played Front Mission game was about 15 years ago. I had SNES and there was a tactical strategy game Front Mission. I really liked it back then. Well, this game is quite different. First, it is a shooter. Second, the game is pretty straightforward. It doesn't have a bunch of abilities or combos or anything that can make the process of killing enemies interesting. It is fun enough to finish it, but it is not fun enough to recommend it to anyone.
If the developers had taken a little more time in development, improved the graphics, scripts, and iron out ubiquitous bugs, it could have been a really good game. Maybe even a hit. Meanwhile, I do not even know whether to recommend Front Mission Evolved or not. In my opinion, the game is worth it to give her a chance. But rather on some good sale, at a fairly low price as this is neither Front Mission nor Armored Core.
Front Mission Evolved was misjudged. As a spin-off of the S-RPG franchise, the very purpose of the game is to offer a different experience using the Front Mission universe (Well it doesn't use the universe of the other games but still, it's a game about a war where mechas called Wanzer are used). Front Mission Evolved is a solid third person shooter with good music and decent visuals. The story could have been better but it's still likeable. Sure it is different (But not much more than the appreciated Front Mission Gun Hasard) but it didn't deserve this treatment.
The first front mission game looked to be a good entry into a genre. Sadly it resorted to a cash cow. With numerous multiplayer dlc for a game without anyone playing in multiplayer, the game defeats itself. sure, the gameplay can be fun at times- but its no fun when the core game play resolves around human players. And as of right now, no one is playing it. The story mode will keep you interested for a few hours...but even then, the story is generic.
