This is a middle of the pack type of MOBA. It plays like one but people will get the general feeling of, "This is a moba, but not really." It's okey, but that is all i can say about it. Everything just handles....ok. nothing spectacular or wows the player or any of that sort. If that is something you are fine with and like Moba like games, then play it.
Guardians of Middle Earth doesn't function like other MOBAs out there like DOTA, League of Legends, Smite, Dawngate, etc. But that's what kills it because it "doesn't" function like a MOBA. Whenever I choose a hero, it feels more like I could stand afk for the whole game and still make enough gold and experience as everyone else because there just isn't much individual progression as there should be. Plus, not everything's free in this game. If you're paying to buy a game and it's a MOBA, then you should expect to get most of the content for free. That's not the case, you're just paying to play the game. You'll have to grind out the in game money to buy your character and spend real cash to unlock skins. Graphically though, the game has it's perks and it's nice to see classic Lord of the Rings characters at your disposal. But it's just the gameplay aspect that kills the game. Maybe if you're Lord of the Rings fan and just want to play around with your favorite characters, then give this game a try. But if you're a experienced MOBA player, just stay away from this game.
Releasing a DOTA/League of Legends clone that need to be paid in order to play, and also with more characters in DLC form, is madness. Even if this is Lord of the Rings MOBA game, it's not worth any price. There is my future vision for this game: free to play + characters in DLC or less and less popularity with shut down. Sadly, Guardiand of Middle Earth can't offer anything new and fresh to MOBA fans. Sure, there are people who love Lord of the Rings (even I do) and some will enjoy this game, but if you have played already LoL or DOTA 2 you won't find much fun in this game. After few matches you will get bored and see that either you are playing with team with only half alive players (the rest will be bots) or you will be seeing same players over and over. Well, maybe this is because I'm new, but it doesn't change the fact that this game is much less popular than 2 biggest players in this genre. I can recommend this game only for really big Lord of the Rings fans or maybe for people who haven't played any MOBA games yet.
First off, the game is very good and has alot of potential (as they have fixed some bugs) but the way they marketed the pricing is bad. My first impressions is that it is a mix of Demigod (upgrades to minions and towers) and LoL (preloadout items that you can store). I bought it on sale so hopefully this sale draws in a bigger community. The other good thing is that original console version was done by one of my favorite PC companies in the 90's, Monolith. Zombie Studios did a good job with the port and improved the UI a bit. I've been playing games on PC and console since the 80's. Strategy has always been my fave. RTS especially. I've played the first DotA since 2005. Since then so many iterations of MOBA style games have flooded the genre but yet only a few stood out; namely Demigod, HON, DotA and LoL. There are some other decent ones like Smite and Soltice Arena. I played the beta for the Infitine Crisis DC MOBA....it's good but it's not great. To be honest, GOME is better. And being an addict with over 5000+ game matches of MOBAs, I can say I highly recommend playing GOME. Now to the poor marketing. They initially charged $40 -$80 when almost all of the MOBAs out there are free or converted to free. I remember Demigod, HON and LoL initially charged $30- $40. I guess since it is a licensed game they're riding on the LOTR fan base and hoping to attract their sales that way. It's a shame because the game is solid and deserves a bigger community and, to me, that's the wrong way to attract players with a MOBA. MOBA games require a 10's and 100's of thousands players to be logged on to even get some kind of human matches without waiting a long time for a match.. It actually automatically adds bots to the match if not enough people join by about 3 mintues. Actually the bots in GOME are pretty good and do give some interesting challenges. Fortunately, those matches also count towards you bonuses and coins but not as much as you would playing with humans. MOBAs are always more enjoyable playing with humans. They also have a Survival mode where you have to defeat swarms of baddies. The sucky thing was that since there isn't a community yet, I played it with one hero and it was almost impossible to pass 2 phases with one guy. Overall, the game itself is very good. It captures the LOTR feel and it is fun and challenging (even with bots). I would give it a higher rating if it weren't for the initially poor pricing and marketing tactics. They should permanently reduce their price to the sale price. They are just limiting their potential. MOBA players buy stuff. They would make even more money with an exponential amount of players if they used the Free to Play game model.
Guardians Of The Middle Earth has to face with giants of the genre such as Dota 2 and League of Legends. The title is structured as a classic MOBA and add some unique elements. For the few who still do not know what it is, it's match in which 10 players divided into 2 teams select a character (here called Guardian) to fight and groped to accompany creatures controlled by the AI towards the enemy base to destroy it, breaking down defensive towers that are located along the streets. In this structure already present in other moba, Guardians Of The Middle Earth adds the ability to enhance the defensive towers, as well as to increase the damage dealt to enemies or to allow the birth of creep much more powerful, like the classic troll. Last note about money management, at the heart of the other MOBA, here completely erased. Instead of a store where you can buy items, we will have free access to each of them (called runes) in the pre game, so be prepared to our liking the equipment of our guardian. We will, however, limited by a very long cooldown time to use these upgrades. In my view, if console players had little choice, propose on a PC this MOBA payment, with packages to buy new characters, when there are the DOTA 2 and LoL free-to-play inevitably leads to failure of the product.
