I hate visual novels and I love visual novels. I still don't know what to think about the genre, but when I was decided about how bad it was Hatoful Boyfriend came to my life to show me how wrong I was. Hatoful Boyfriend features exactly what I demand when I play a visual novel: interactivity. I need to feel that my choices matter and that I'm not reading just a book. I understand people loving these games but I'm not a good reader, so, what makes me play games like these is the fact that I love those "make your own adventure" books. There are different paths in Hatoful Boyfriend, and replaying it gives you the true idea about how well done this game is. Actually, what is really interesting about Hatoful Boyfriend is that it features a dating simulator system in a scenario that looks incredibly stupid and makes you feel even more stupid when you actually care about each one of the characters in it. But Hatoful Boyfriend includes way more things than a dating simulator. What really made the game worth it was discovering the true path of the game and reaching the true ending. I won't spoil anything, so, go get it!
A visual novel where you play as a human girl that must get a bird boyfriend, or die. One of the strangest visual novels I've played, and yet I also expected it to be stranger. Every character that you can date has multiple endings, there is also a bad ending where you don't get any of their endings. Discover the answer to important questions like do you see your best bird friend as more than a friend, is one of your possible boyfriends a murderer, and is there a hidden evil inside of the school. Focus on raise different stats such as your wisdom or charisma in order to attract your favorite bird. Allows for a setting that changes the bird graphics to be humans for people that aren't attracted to birds. The strange premise combined with the absurd situations in the game make it a very enjoyable game.
I have never played a game before that made me question my current sexuality in ways that I didn't know existed. Hatoful Boyfriend is that game. I'm a mostly straight male, and I'm perfectly comfortable playing otomes and dating sims. But this game... I mean, it's got an interesting story, and it's tons funny often, but for brief moments here and there, the game actually got me to care about the boys I—I mean, my character was falling in love with. These were birds! This is an avian love story! But I cared about who I—my character... was going to date. Despite all that, I'd say it was a pretty good experience. I learned a lot about myself while having a few giggles along the way.
Well, you might be saying: But how could a Japanese dating sim indie game has such an amazing story. Well, it just DOES. The story starts with you, a girl that enrolls in a all bird school and must fit in and hopefully find a nice guy there. The cool part is, every guy has a very unique and awesome characteristics and you get multiple endings on every guy plus some random endings and an ultimate ending to the story. You don't do much except chose some text based options once in a while but it really is a cool story. So if you want to experience an awesome story this is the right game for the job!
It all starts in a high school for birds, yes, that is really unusual for anyone. There you can talk with..birds and overall you have to find your true love, or get killed. Anyways, my pros and cons are these: Pros -enjoyable characters -you can date birds -our choices might get us killed, it's not all about talking with birds. -graphics are fine, but gameplay > graphics -music won't make you feel like instantly muting and using your own Cons -you have to play the same line all over to get multiple endings -gameplay is simple, fitting just for casuals
