I agree with other reviewers, this is probably the best of the series. Over 400 hours into it, and still haven't tried all the options. Even though it lacks some of the nice features of HOI3, and some of the polish, it has other really interesting options that make up for it. The ability to start before 1936, the option to continue play until the 1960's, all make for really interesting alternate history options. Add in Doomsday and Armageddon and it just gets better. Try playing as the Confederate States of America. Not a game for the faint of heart, and definitely not a 'Build more tanks and throw them at the enemy base' type of game. There are about 300 different things to keep in mind, and you can lose an entire war because you forgot to check the terrain or weather. But if you like indepth historical strategy, this is definitely a must have. No other series comes close.
this is the best of the series so far. HoI3 was a complete disappointment for the strategy community. HoI2 interface is simple and effective, no 3d animation but still good graphics. the game works flawlessly and responds quickly to your input. HoI3 lags because of the awful unit sprites and 3d vectors. stick with Hoi2 !
Hearts of Iron has always been aimed at hardcore strategy gamers, and so was its sequel - Hearts of Iron II. The complete edition of the game includes Doomsday and Armageddon - two expansions to the game, and is still preferred by many gamers over the later Hearts of Iron III. Thanks to simpler graphics it may feel less cluttered and better streamlined, so whoever cares less about visuals than gameplay may actually appreciate it. It is also much less computer-resource-hungry, which allows it to be run on older computers. It is still a very interesting and demanding strategy game, one of the best of World War II strategies. As close to being a simulation of this conflict as it gets!
