Has potential

Ollanius_Pius

Hearts of Iron 4 has potential but has mainly just disappointed me because the DLCs offer little, the AI is comically bad, and many nations lack focus trees. But I have still enjoyed the game despite its flaws, conquering the world as a minor nation such as Brazil is fun but gets repetitive quickly without unique focus trees or events. The game has tried to become simpler but has in doing so lost good features like chain of command, which they are currently working on, that added to the games management aspect and was enjoyable. Overall it could be improved with new updates but right now it is pretty lackluster.

It's not as great as everyone might say

coldrefreader

So, I like this game a lot - all the historical events (Like the Hindenburg incident), the rather easy-on-the-eye technology and national focus tabs and so on. But every game has its flaws - the AI, pretty much single player in a whole. Let's say I am playing as Romania and the Soviet Union wants me to cede Bessarabia to them ( a big province that borders them ). Let's say I change history and refuse and they declare war on me, but here's the trick - I have level 10 forts (99% impossible to break through) all across the border. What does the AI do? It sends its entire army at these forts, drying up their equipment and manpower (death ratios should be like 100-1). So yeah, the AI is a bit confused. On the other hand - the multi player is quite enjoyable and fun with friends. Nothing much to add to that. The way combat works - you set up a front line with your divisions (they have to be led by a leader) on the border with a neighbour. Then, you draw an offensive line which leads to some specific location (The divisions will capture every province on the way tho, so it's fine). That's it, that's all you do. If you want to actually bother doing anything interesting - you can set up a naval invasion if you have sea superiority and have divisions on a dock. You can also use paratroopers if you have air superiority aaand that's all. (Nukes are late-game weapon that is quite dirty, no need to explain what a nuke does). You can also change the division setup - you can add support divisions like a field hospital, a recon, support AA and so on. Technology - it's just that, technology. You can research things like industry (speeds up equipment creation, construction building, resource gathering and so on). Then there are also stuff like researching the said above support divisions, bonuses to your divisions, unlocks tanks, planes and ships and also allows you to pick doctrines - they offer different playstyles to how your land, air and sea combat goes (or just pick one because you like its bonuses and do what you usually do). So, National Focuses - each one takes from 35 to 140 days( I think that's the longest ), they are pretty much what you use to take paths if the country you play as has a custom one (nearly every country has a basic focus tree that simply allows them to do...basic things, seriously). They give various things, events and so on - for example, you can choose to join the Comintern as France, or Czechoslovakia, or Romania... and so on. It pretty much allows you to change your playstyle and builds up your country. Overall, it's quite enjoyable game, but so far there isn't much variety, since max 20 countries out of all have something interesting and unique.

Dream of every strategy fan.

gmgtochuje

Hearts of Iron IV is the dream of any strategist wishing to take on the role of the leader of one of the biggest wars of the last century. All the aspects of the game, such as military and fleet command, diplomacy or economy, is on the highest level of complexity. In this game we are creating and shaping our own world and the rest is besed on our decisions, the chosen strategy and the choices we make.

Great WW2 simulation

ElwoodBlues

Hearts of Iron 4 is a great WW2 simulation and takes the wargaming genre to a new level. Compared to Hearts of Iron 3 it is way more intuitive without losing the need of in-depth strategical thinking like frontline planning, division composition, fine-tuning the economy and political policies.

Simplified and improved

stadel

Interesting WW2 simulator; instead of focusing on intensive micro of multiple units your frontlines are managed by an AI, carrying out our orders. Improves on a lot of points compared to HoI 3, such as a new and simplified supply system, trading system, and economy. It lacks a bit of replayability though, you either play one of the great eight powers, which are unique, or you play a minor nation, which always ends up the same way.
