This feature adds replayability and puts weight behind the battles you fight. Tactical Layer. The graphics are surprisingly high-end for a small studio. The ship models are very good quality and have re-skins at different levels of damage, showing pockmarks and scorch marks from cannon hits. Merton approached the Austrian government for a passible naval arms deal. Relations between the Austrian Empire and the North were poor during the war. The Austrians tried to interest the Confederacy in steam warships, many of them gunboats. With the New Orleans ironclads, they could present a dangerous challenge to the Union navy on the high seas, potentially capable of overwhelming squadrons on individual blockading stations. In reality, the deal never took place - but it could have happened!

It's quite original for a strategy game, and even more original for a game about naval warfare to be set during the American Civil War. Ironclads 2 is a wargame where you'll have to fight on the sea against a very smart AI. However the game can seem complicated at first. The absence of tutorial doesn't help either (Check the manual!). But once you've mastered the gameplay, it gets very fun. There are two modes : real time and turn-based. I recommend to play in Turn-based mode. The game is lot more interesting with that setting. As I said, the AI is very clever. It will take advantage of every mistake you'll make. It can do advanced maneuvers like tactical withdrawal and will crush if you fall in its traps. The graphics are pretty good for such a low-budget game. Ironclads 2 American Civil War is an excellent strategy game.
