“The simple yet pithy strategic layer gives battles new weight, new meaning... The new turn-based strategic game works rather well. During the course of a 48 month/turn campaign, there are thought-provoking choices aplenty. Should I invest in another shore battery at Mobile or invest in something more mobile at Mobile? Should I expand my merchant fleet in the hope of generating some quick trade receipts, or focus on constructing the seagoing warships necessary to protect that merchant fleet? Am I ready to attack Key West, or would it be better to concentrate on strengthening the blockade there?” - Rock Paper Shotgun
“Strategic Layer. That this even exists is one of my favorite things about this game. Totem Games avoided this pitfall by designing a strategic layer to the game from which the tactical battles are generated. This feature adds replayability and puts weight behind the battles you fight. Tactical Layer. The graphics are surprisingly high-end for a small studio. The ship models are very good quality and have re-skins at different levels of damage, showing pockmarks and scorch marks from cannon hits. Fires, when they occur, look very nice, and the smoke from fires and the powerplants is very well done. Ships list when taking on water. The quality of the water is near immaculate.” - SubSim
In 1862, when Farragut's Union squadron was preparing to occupy the vital hub of the South - New Orleans, the Confederate agent L. Merton approached the Austrian government for a passible naval arms deal. Relations between the Austrian Empire and the North were poor during the war. The Austrians tried to interest the Confederacy in steam warships, many of them gunboats. With the New Orleans ironclads, they could present a dangerous challenge to the Union navy on the high seas, potentially capable of overwhelming squadrons on individual blockading stations. In reality, the deal never took place - but it could have happened!
Create your fleet and army, hunt the enemy's fleet, hide your weak squadrons in protected ports until reinforcements arrive, blockade enemy trade routes, amphibious assaults and harbour sieges, struggle for dominance over the seas in turned-based strategic mode - All of these actions are possible in Ironclad 2 American Civil War. The real time tactical battle mode allows you to set up battles and squadron groups with their formations and management using realistic ship models and characteristics as well as advanced ballistics and weapon models. Choose your ships, increase the experience of your crews and send your squadron into the high seas. Command a battle formation and experience the power of iron and steam in a turned-based maritime strategy mode while fighting battles with a tactical real time naval simulation game. Ironclads 2: American Civil War is the second full-fledged title of Totem Games' marine turn-based strategy. The plot of the game returns to the theme of the Civil War, introducing a hypothetical scenario in which the Confederate troops receive help from the Austrian government with modern and well armed warships. In fact, such a scheme did not occur, although it could radically change the course of the conflict.
It's quite original for a strategy game, and even more original for a game about naval warfare to be set during the American Civil War. Ironclads 2 is a wargame where you'll have to fight on the sea against a very smart AI. However the game can seem complicated at first. The absence of tutorial doesn't help either (Check the manual!). But once you've mastered the gameplay, it gets very fun. There are two modes : real time and turn-based. I recommend to play in Turn-based mode. The game is lot more interesting with that setting. As I said, the AI is very clever. It will take advantage of every mistake you'll make. It can do advanced maneuvers like tactical withdrawal and will crush if you fall in its traps. The graphics are pretty good for such a low-budget game. Ironclads 2 American Civil War is an excellent strategy game.
