Just Cause 2 is probably best known for its constant comparisons to Michael Bay's films. Everything explodes. If you jump off a motorcycle, it will explode no matter what it hits, pretty much all your goals revolve around blowing stuff up, and it has barely any semblance of a coherent plot stringing it together. It's a LOT of fun, though. The grapple + parachute movement system feels like swinging around as Spider-Man in that old Xbox game, just with more rockets and grenades. Oh and there's of course other fun things like crawling around on the top of a fighter jet as it careens out of control toward a village.
This game is very fun to play since you have the ability to destroy so much of the buildings on the map. The story is okay and can be funny at times. I would say this game is a good pick-up when it is on sale for some easy fun !
This is a very great game, as there is so much to do. There is so much to discover as the map is very big. You can have so much fun by yourself or even online with the multiplayer mod. I bought this game whilst there was a huge discount and I still play it time to time because its so much fun. There is a large variety of mods available to enhance your gameplay and extend your fun. There may be some bugs but it is hardly noticeable unless its a game crash or similar. Overall, this game is great and still is with its sequel that came out. I would rate it 8.5/10 .
I never played the first Just Cause. I've heard it does not have the grappling hook. Just Cause 2 locates you on a big island open world. It is big. Getting from one side to the other can take quite a while depending on the speed of your vehicle. Most of my play time has been spent traveling, requiring me to work out groups of missions in the same area. The grappling hook reminds me of the movement in a Spider-man game, but I get to shoot people. The hook allows me to climb buildings swiftly, latch onto vehicles, yank bad guys, or even use it as a tow rope. In my opinion, it's the best part of the game. The vehicle handling can be quite tricky but that's most likely because I'm using a keyboard and mouse set up. My emergency brake on the cars causes me to spin out, and I have yet to get a plane off the ground. Helicopters has been the fastest and easiest mode of travel for me. The island has a lot of different factions and encourages the player to cause chaos. You can invest a lot of time into this island, its not an eight hour game.
Just Cause 2 is nothing but pure brainless action movie insanity in a sandbox so wide it would take the entire Sahara Desert to fill. And I love it! This game is an easy way to spend a good hundred hours exploring, finding collectables, doing side missions, and occasionally remembering there's actually a story and doing the actual missions that plot it out. The map is, as mentioned, incredible in scale and allows for lots of time to just get lost and appreciate how big it really is, flying across the map in a jet or seeing how high you can reach before bailing out and taking several minutes to reach the ground before launching your grappling hook at the ground and pulling yourself to it to get a safe landing. Apparently hitting the ground slightly faster than terminal velocity is just as good as using a parachute. The story in this game is dumb. Not in a bad way, though. It's fun dumb, there to just give you a reason to be there and cause turmoil on this island whose dictator is somewhere between Kim Jong Il/Un and whatever stereotype you imagine a middle-eastern dictator is, mostly because there's oil involved for the latter. The grappling hook is a fantastic mechanic and lets you quickly pull yourself to any surface within reach and pull yourself immediately to it. Your character, Rico Rodriguez is apparently a physics defying wizard based on how he pulls himself along the zipline with no gravity, has access to unlimited parachutes, and as mentioned can avoid death by terminal velocity by pulling himself straight to the ground. The missions are action movie set pieces infused with concentrated testosterone. One of my favourites was one where you had to break into a missile silo, then quickly jump into a jet and take off to catch and shoot it down before it exploded. Bottom Line: If you love sandboxes but GTA is getting too serious and Saint's Row is getting too absurd, and you love action, explosions, and silliness that pretends to be serious, this game is for you.
