Monster Jam Battlegrounds is a combination of Trails HD style gameplay, a 2.5D time trial through an obstacle course or objective based course, and an arena based 3D race or freestyle mode. The objective based levels will have you attempting to gain a set amount of distance from a long jump or will require you to land on a certain spot. The freestyle mode requires you to get points by doing tricks, although the scoring system makes little sense and you can get the best rating just by doing a few long jumps. Each event gives you one to three stars based on your performance which are used to unlock more events and to gain points that allow you to upgrade your trucks. The physics are poor and the trucks still spin around like they are in 3D on the 2D levels, the graphics are poor in the 2D stages and worse in the 3D, music and sound is dull, truck sounds will be heard over the music, sound will occasionally cut out, many of the trucks are just cosmetic changes and have the same stats, the objective and freestyle stages can often be easily completed with little effort. The entire game should only take you about four hours and the stages have little real replay value. The Trials games and even previous games in this series are going to give you a better game for your money as this Monster Jam just falls short in too many areas, this title is only worth a look if you are desperate for a monster truck game or if you have finished all the Trials games and want something somewhat similar in style.
