Portal™ is a new single player game from Valve. Set in the mysterious Aperture Science Laboratories, Portal has been called one of the most innovative new games on the horizon and will offer gamers hours of unique gameplay.
The game is designed to change the way players approach, manipulate, and surmise the possibilities in a given environment; similar to how Half-Life® 2's Gravity Gun innovated new ways to leverage an object in any given situation.
Players must solve physical puzzles and challenges by opening portals to maneuvering objects, and themselves, through space.
The original Portal can be described in one word, primarily: innovative. The concept, in which you use a gun that creates portals to solve puzzles, is something that as far as I'm aware had never been done up until this point. The execution is near-flawless, coupling your trials with the demotivational chatter of an AI on the fritz, the game has an enormous charm and unique atmosphere. Now that Portal 2 is out I don't think I would recommend this game as strongly as I did before, simply because that game is a much more complete experience, but if you're looking for a short introduction to the world of Portal, this is a good choice.
An instant classic and probably one of the best puzzle games ever made. Portal is just perfect, and it only lacks some more hours of gameplay. The fact is that Portal looks like a demo from Valve than a real game due to its duration. Portal is something unique, something that inspired a new generation of first person puzzle games as it happened with Half-Life and the FPS genre. Bad news is no matter how deep you dig you probably won't find something better than Portal doing what it does, except Portal 2. Go for it, just have in mind that it won't last long. Like having a piece of your favourite cake when you actually need to eat the whole thing.
I played this game because it was in the orange box. I thought it would be nothing special, but I was so very wrong. Its a rather simple and short game, but its puzzles are fantastic. The game really allows you to tackle the obstacles in any way you want. Sure, the game designer had a certain method that they try to lay out, but they dont force you to go that route. The humor is very good, and has had a huge impact on gaming culture. When this is bundled with Portal 2, just get it.
Portal is the first game from the series, it shows how valve can innovate on creating different games, not only first person shooters like Half-Life or Counter Strike, this time it is a game based on solving puzzles using portals, the textures looks kinda dirt in some chambers and the protagonist model isn't great, but in Portal 2 valve fixed it, even with these issues, this game is a must buy, test your mind, have some fun, and buy Portal 2 for more fun.
As someone who played Portal 2 first, Portal was a bit of a surprise. First off, its much harder than its older sister, which was I enjoyed. If you struggled through 2, however, expect to be frustrated. Portal 2 stood out to me because it was one of the games that nailed humor on a level above just slapstick. While you can tell the Portal devs have a sense of humor, this game is not primarily funny. Don't expect as much from the plot. While Portal is certainly one of the greats, Portal 2 fans shouldn't get their expectations too high.
