Sanctum is a First Person Shooter Tower Defense where you take the role as Skye, an elite soldier sent out to protect her home town, Elysion One, from hordes of mysterious alien creatures.
To succeed you have to construct and upgrade defensive structures. What makes Sanctum unique from other Tower Defense games is that when the havoc starts, you jump right into the action with your own weapons and play a key role in the defense. Sanctum has taken the best features from First Person Shooters and Tower Defense games to create something totally unique.

Sanctum features two of my most beloved videogame genres: tower defense and FPS. This mixture works so well it looks like they've been done a thousand times, but the fact is that Sanctum is an innovative game in is own way. It's easy to explain Sanctum. Imagine the generic tower defense game. You have some time to place the turrets, upgrade them or whatever to avoid waves of enemies reaching the core. Once you've placed the turrets the round starts and it becomes a generic FPS where you can shoot the incoming enemies with different weapons. You can also upgrade your weapons just like you do with the turrets. There are plenty of enemies with different stats and movements, different turrets and different weapons you have to choose in the starting menu. The game only lacks some structure, as you can only select the levels and play them separately. No story or any connection between each levels. The game also features some game mods including a fun multiplayer co-operative game. I've enjoyed this game way more than I can tell.
Sanctum allows the player to experience a first person view of a tower defense game. The towers are easily build able and upgradeable like in any other tower defense. There is a twist, however. You can choose your character and defeat monsters by making them go through your maze of towers. The weapons and gameplay style is unique and provides a very fun aspect of tower defense games.
This game is a lot of fun with more than one player. The difficulty scales very decent with the number of players and different game mods really help to measure it. It is quick and easy to get a game setup without a ton of menus. I've had hours of fun just messing around with friends and the voice chat. There are a lot of cool features such as map ping, which all allies can see, and a map that shows the position of everyone else. I suggest to pick this one up if you are looking to spend a good time with friends.
FPS + Tower Defense + win poses = One heck of a game. Sanctum is your basic Tower defense game where you stop *Aliens* from reaching the end. At your disposal are futuristic looking towers (there's even 1 called, i kid you not, The "Penetrator"... which penetrates enemies. What were you thinking about?) and a selection of familiar weapons (the Rifle, shotgun, rocket launcher, even a freeze cannon). to allow you to personally enter the fray. The enemies are varied, from the basic scouts (think zerg rushers) to the heavy shield variety. Thankfully, the weakpoints of all enemies are usually obvious enough for you to spot - they appear as bright yellow dots. Remember to look up for flyers! Now, while the graphics are not the best (game released in 2011), the game play is still fun, especially if you're into this genre of games. If you can get friends to help out, it gets a lot more easier, especially the harder difficulties. Othewise, it's still do-able solo. There's even a wiki to help you design your tower structure beforehand. Aim well, shoot carefully, and remember to dance when you win!
I have played Sanctum games in wrong order - started with Second, then this. Was it hard to me? Nope. Both of Sanctum main games are different from each other. In my opinion, first Sanctum is much harder. There are more options of style you want to beat maps and waves. You can upgrade here your weapon, so if you wan't to deal with enemies personally without much help from towers - you are free to do it. In the base game there aren't many maps but there are two map packs, so remember to get them if you don't want to end your fun with Sanctum too fast. It's great Tower Defense and FPS mix, I enjoyed it as much as with Sanctum 2.
