System Shock 2 is an old and a classic game between shooters and RPG. I think System Shock was the first game to implement RPG element in a first person shooter game for the era, and the game still beautiful, challenging and the AI and enemies crazier as ever. This is one of the best game to start playing RPG or story driven shooter games before jumping into Bioshock, Half Life, Metro and the list goes on. Recommended.
System Shock 2 is a game about a man that wakes up on a ship under siege by zombies and a rampant AI. The only way to survive is to wrest control from the rogue AI with the help of another rogue AI. If you perform well, you get good boy points to spend on trendies power ups, skills and stat-boosts. The game is pretty challenging, you need to play very safely and careful. Conserving your ammunition, healing items and everything else is absolutely vital. You need to watch where you're going and make sure you don't trigger the security. The game is pretty scary and incredibly atmospheric. You will find cryptic audio logs made by your other crew members, some of which were recorded moments before their death. Its really cool because there's plenty of intertwining and individual stories told by the audio logs as you progress through the game, all of which eventually come to a tragic conclusion. There's plenty of different play-styles, there's melee weapons, PSI abilities (basically magic), explosive weapons, energy weapons and "exotic" weapons.
Since the day it came out I was never the same, it changed my mind on what games can do and what games can be, it was the first fully 3D open-world(ish) game that had RPG elements and action in one place. The game has weapon repair skill. hacking skill, research skill mod skill and other, you also have PSI powers (if you train for that), it's like Mage in your typical RPG games - you can make objects move, you can fire with it and other stuff that you can unlock in upgrade stations. The game hasn't aged well, but if you can see through the graphics and models you will find one awesome game.
I recently bought this game because I kept hearing how great of a classic game it was. After playing it, I can completely see how it was amazing for it's time. Now however, it can be played as a funny game. I did enjoy it from that perspective. The graphics are old and I found myself laughing out loud at the characters because they looked barely recognizable as humans. The monsters look like blobs of colors that moan. But it's charming because of that. The game play is staple FPS stuff, so nothing special there. The story is well thought out, but kind of cheesy. If you have nostalgia for this game, buy it. If you want a cheap laugh, buy it.
This is one of those classics that any fan of RPGs and even shooters has to play at least once in their life. Very few will be able to handle the intense difficulty, but it is worth it. This is the spiritual beginnings of Bioshock and many other action RPGs that have come after it. It seamlessly combines character progression and skill accumulation with action gunning gameplay. The enemies, akin to zombies but have guns, may look graphically aged - but they will come to terrify you. If you are looking for a classic, philosophical and enjoyable experience - get this game.
