Game description

With this official add-on to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, you can purchase land and build your own home from the ground up - from a simple one-room cottage to a sprawling compound complete with an armory, alchemy laboratory, stable, garden, and more. Use all-new tools like the drafting table and carpenter’s workbench to transform quarried stone, clay, and sawn logs into structures and furnishings. Even transform your house into a home by adopting children.

Key features:

  • Choose Your Land:

Choose from property in the salt marshes of Hjaalmarch, the forests of Falkreath, or the vast tundra of The Pale. For the more ambitious landowner, purchase multiple plots and start building a real estate empire.

  • Customize Your Home:

Expand your home with a variety of room combinations including an armory, alchemy tower, kitchen, trophy room and more. Grow plants in your new greenhouse, cultivate slaughterfish in the fish hatchery, house your Arcane Enchanter in the enchanting tower, or display your latest conquest in the trophy room. Add additional features like stables, mills, smelters, gardens and more.

  • New Objectives and Interactions:

Guard your home from unwanted visitors like marauding kidnappers, armed bandits, and skeever infestations. Turn almost any follower into your personal steward to improve and protect your home. Or if you require more help, hire a personal bard or carriage driver to ease the burdens of home ownership.

  • Adoption:

Transform your house into a home with Hearthfire’s all-new adoption system. Adopt children and discover new ways to interact with your family. Play games with the kids, allow them to have pets and gain new bonuses from having a family.

Perfect for the Skyrim player with too much (virtual) money

If you like to role-play as much as you can in a game, then this DLC is for you. Make no mistake, compared to the other 2 DLCs for Skyrim, this one doesn't add any new enemies, locations of continue the story. What it does, though, is improving the already existing role-playing and immersive elements in the vanilla game, making your experience the game's world fell that much more realistic. This downloadable content allows you to adopt children (and thus form your own family along with the partner you chose in the base game), craft new equipment and items using new materials, as well as using random, apparently useless items which previously had no purpose (as noted in the title, any self-respecting Skyrim player probably finished the game with way more money than they knew what to do with, so this is a chance to spend all that money with a purpose). Of particular note here are the 3 houses (manors, bigger than anything you could previously own) you can build and furnish if you so choose. This DLC provides just that extra content that you may have wished was in the base game, and while not for everyone, it is certainly worth adding to your collection if you're a fan of role-playing games (in the true sense of the word anyway).

Good DLC just underwhelming

It's not Sims in Skyrim. Customization is pretty limited, but it is nice to have a house in Skyrim catered towards the player. The DLC basically adds a bit of additional gameplay on top of the base game. You get to build a house from ground up in a scripted environment. Scripted as in: it's set in one location, each part of the house has a specific silhouette...you can only build a drawer in this specific corner of the house etc. Once again, options are very limited, maybe like 2-5? On top of the customization, there are additional side quests such as rescuing your spouse and adopting children. None of those really have an impact on the gameplay sadly. Last thing i would like to point out is that this DLC makes alchemy 10000x easier. Instead of going around looking for ingredients, you can simply look for one and mass farm it in your home's greenhouse or backyard. For the price, i think this DLC is above average. Adds not much to the game, but if you want to collect every content for Skyrim, this is a must pick up.

The Sims in the Elder Scrolls

Ever wanted to build your own home? Start your own family? Adopt a child to raise? Kill the occasional bandit who tries to raid your lands? This is essentially what Hearthfire accomplishes. It doesn't add much to the game, but provides some further immersion and personal ownership over your property. The DLC goes on sale quite often, so I'd recommend picking it up when it's half off.

Nice houses and pretty good customization

This piece of DLC is pretty simple, but it still feels like it adds a lot to the game. Having a home, or maybe ten homes, feels nice, but their only practical purpose is to store stuff at, or to have much stuff concentrated in one place. Anyway, the houses that can be built on the plots of land look great, and the customization is good. You have the main hall, and can then build other rooms in the different wings and a cellar. All the rooms feel very cozy, and can be customized with different furniture, which is placed automatically as you build it. The homes that can be bought in the cities look great too, but the customization isn't quite as extensive. Considering the small price for this, and the fact that Skyrim and its DLC is featured on pretty much every major sale, I don't see why you wouldn't pick this up. It makes Skyrim feel a lot more immersive, in my opinion.

Worth for Lakeview

You get 3 houses in this mod, but 2 of them pale in comparison to the one in Falkreath hold; Lakeview Manor. It also adds in adoption (which btw is a pretty nice feature) and new items. You actually have to acquire the materials through lots of gold or lots of time, or both! All in all, if you're looking for something simple but well-made, this is a great little expansion pack to get.
