Vermintide is a co-operative action first person shooter and melee combat adventure set in the End Times of the iconic Warhammer Fantasy universe.
Vermintide takes place in and around Ubersreik, a city overrun by Skaven. You will assume the role of one of five heroes, each featuring different play-styles, abilities, gear and personality. Working cooperatively, you must use their individual attributes to survive an apocalyptic invasion from the hordes of relentless rat-men, known as the Skaven. Battles will take place across a range of environments stretching from the top of the Magnus Tower to the bowels of the Under Empire.
The time of mortals is ending, and the reign of Chaos draws ever closer. The Dark Gods are at last united in a singular purpose, losing their madness across the world as never before. In the Empire of Sigmar, Karl Franz's gaze is focused on the incursion of the savage northmen, but it is not the only threat. As the Chaos moon Morrslieb waxes full, shrill voices echo through tunnels gnawed far beneath the Empire's cities, and a Skaven host swarms towards the surface. It emerges first in the city of Ubersreik, a screeching mass that consumes all before it. Soon Ubersreik is a charnel-town, drowning beneath the malevolent shadow of the Horned Rat.
Yet even in the darkest times, there are always champions to light the way. As Ubersreik cowers, five heroes, united by capricious fate, carry the fight to the rat-men. It remains to be seen whether they have the strength to survive, let alone work together long enough to thwart the invaders. One truth, however, is beyond all doubt: should these five fall, then Ubersreik will fall with them.

Warhammer: End Times Vermintide seems to be the start of a, hopefully, continuing trend of good Warhammer video games. The gameplay is similar to Left 4 Dead but with each of the game's five characters playing differently, being able to use different weapons, and the game has a loot system for weapons and armor. Weapons can include one and two handed swords and axes, rapiers, war hammers, maces, shields, duel weldable daggers and swords, etc. The game is much more melee focused than Left 4 Dead but each of the characters still gets a ranged attack which can be a crossbow, bow, pistol, blunderbuss, or AoE fire magic for the Bright Wizard character. You are limited to doing weak or strong attacks, there is an alternate fire button but it only allows the Witch Hunter character to quickly fire a pistol, would have been nice to have it do an extra kind of attack for the others or a unique ability for them. Like Left 4 Dead, you will fight your way through maps, sometimes defending areas or completing objectives by carrying things to certain places, and mixed in with the regular fodder are special enemies that will throw poison, grab you, tackle and stab you, or who are much more deadly fighters. As you travel through levels you can find bombs, potions of strength or speed, healing items, and hidden items that make things more difficult for you but that increase your chance of getting good loot if you succeed. The allied AI is terrible, even worse than the Left 4 Dead games, it can be almost impossible to finish even easy missions with the allied AI ignoring you when you are held by an enemy, not picking you up when you are down, getting stuck on things, and the same refusal to use items or pick up objectives that the AI had in the Left 4 Dead series. If you have some people to play it with this is a very fun game, a survival mode has recently been added to it for free. The collector's edition should really only be bought if you have an interest in supporting the developer, it does include a lot of things but the in-game items are nothing that interesting and it is a lot to pay for the soundtrack and a digital map.
