Warlords Battlecry III further expands the Battlecry tradition of featuring persistent RPG-like fantasy heroes with its retinue of loyal followers fighting massive battles in the Warlords' world of Etheria. It is a true sequel to Warlords Battlecry I & II, featuring many familiar races and troop-types, while also adding some new ones into the mix.

Warlords Battlecry III continues to perfect its automated feature system, greatly reducing gameplay micromanagement and quickly proving to be the holy grail of RTS games among gamers of the genre.

A much neglected game

I bought this game ages ago and really enjoyed it. I have probably sunk more hours into it than any other game. The RTS is done well but as others have noted it is not the best. What is good is the variety of races and the way that they all work quite differently from each other. This alone would make for a fun game. The storyline is okay and does provide some interest although nothing special. The RPG element of having a hero that can be highly specialised is probably the best feature. The variety of skills and how they combine together provides for quite a bit of fun experimenting and each class will have different strengths depending on what race you are using. This RPG feature alone also make for a fun game. Put RPG and RTS together; fantastic! Resource management, in game quests, retinue of champions that can gain experience and be used again and again until they die; all great features. What I love about this game is how all of these come together for a fun and unique experience (even if it is a bit dated).

Excellent blend of RTS and RPG

The Warlords Battlecry series was the perfect mix of real-time strategy and role-playing elements. Managing an army from an RTS perspective while customising your hero character from an RPG angle makes for a unique experience. While Battlecry III is not as good as Battlecry II was - the story doesn't feel as invigorating, and the gameplay not as tight - it is still an excellent game to play.


One of my favourite games ever. Highly recommend it

Dated, but still a timespender

This game may not be the best of the RTS genre, but it has a long life in between the missions. There you manage your hero, see all the tiniest little stat and also carry over good leveled units. Further it has a big variety of factions to choose from. It had me hooked for many hours. It would have done a lot better with some bug cleanups and an easier UI. It is quite hard to cast spells at the same time as managing your battlefield as it is now. I would also like to see support for widescreen, but that's just wishful thinking.

Not just a bad RTS clone

When I first played this you could notice it was not top notch compared to other RTS. Yet I got stuck mostly because it was the first (for me) RTS where you developed a hero. There was also something with the atmosphere of the game that I both liked and disliked. I recommend you try it if you like these kind of games, but have in mind the quality of the game is not like other better RTS:es of its time.
