This really is what catapults a great game to the sphere of excellence. This expansion adds greatly to the amount of content in the game, and greatly increases replay value. On it's own, it's an excellent addition. Add to that the excellent 'long war' mod, and you get a game that is almost infinitely replayable. I wouldn't normally say that something is worth buying just for a mod, but this most certainly is. however, with the sequel out, this is no longer a premium product: buy it on a sale - but there's no need to wait for a steep one: it's worth every penny.
If you liked Xcom Enemy unknown, you have to buy this! While it is called a DCL, it's actually more like the Expansion packs of old games, that gave like 40% content to the core game. Enemy Within changes Xcom from the start! From the start, it gives every mission a sense of urgency, with the collectible items, and the new enemies are really tough! In the base game, the aliens could really make your life difficult, but at least they didn't have invisible hentai monsters, and insane trigger happy versions of Xcom soldiers, armed with rocket launchers! To even the odds, Xcom has some new tricks as well. Using the collectibles, they can create super soldiers, who are even more deadly then the colonels of the first game. With the right combination you can actually make the game look easy to win....eventually.
The base game, xcom was a gem by itself. Xcom enemy within adds the extra glitter and gold to the game. I really enjoyed the new unit types. The "mecha" units are the coolest additions to xcom because they add a whole new layer of gameplay. You can make the mech units a stationary cover or just a walking tank of destruction. If not, they can be extremely mobile medics and more. The other mention worthy addition is the introduction of base assault. Every so often, your base gets attacked by the aliens and you have to deal with waves of aliens while waiting for reinforcements. This mission makes sense because it was weird how the aliens wouldn't attack your base in the base game. Now, they do and it's cool for the first few times. It becomes very tiring laster on as you see the same cutscenes...same everything as it repeats itself. Still, enemy within is worth it because it'll add another hundred hours to your gametime.
The new abilities and units you can research and build are expensive but devastating if taken care of. These new units will make the older teams obsolete but you will have to be extra careful in keeping these soldiers alive as the new resources can be hard to come by. Once you get a few fully upgraded it is well worth the risk of investing so much into so few soldiers as they become extremely powerful. The new missions and new enemy human faction are a welcome edition with several fun easter eggs built into their gameplay if you look for them. Highly recommended for anyone that enjoyed the base Enemy Unknown, a good expansion that adds a lot more to the game.
to be honest you dont have to own this dlc in order to enjoy xcom eu, i played many-many hours on the base game (not mentioning the mods that are available to it), but if you get this dlc you get a whole different experience from the game. * new game options * new weapons * new classes * new research it basically makes the game more interesting and with more options. if you liked the base game, you should give this a try, it a really dissent DLC (not like other games that release "skins" as dlc this one release dissent content)
