We all know that Back 4 Blood is about fighting your way through the Ridden. But you may be wondering what actually happened to cause such an event. Why are we fighting, how did it happen, and where all of this is taking place? Here is what we know about the Back 4 Blood story and lore of the world you will be fighting in.
Back 4 Blood Lore: The Ridden and the Devil Worm
In Back 4 Blood, you will be placed firmly in the middle of a war against the Ridden. Once upon a time the Ridden were people. Now they’re nothing more than hosts of a deadly parasite that has turned them into terrifying and deadly creatures who want to devour what remains of civilisation. With the extinction of humanity on the line, it’s up to you and your friends to take the fight to the enemy, eradicate the Ridden, and reclaim the world…or what’s left of it.
The parasite which has infected the human race is known as the Devil Worm, and seems to have extraterrestrial origins. Once a human has contracted it, they’re then transformed into one of the Ridden. It was first discovered in the Pingualuit National Park in Quebec Canada, where samples of the parasite were collected and brought to a lab in Quebec City.
The parasite then managed to breach its containment and spread across Canada and the United States, eventually finding its way around the entire world. Civilisation was plunged into chaos as the Devil worm ran rampant. But some are immune to the effects of the parasite.
Whilst many of the Ridden resemble the shambling zombies we all know, some have mutated even further as an unknown mechanism of the Devil Worm. This makes them stronger, bigger and more dangerous than any of the common infected. The special Ridden possesses a higher intelligence and are capable of planning attacks, whereas the more common Ridden will attack on sight.
The Cleaners
In Back 4 Blood lore, the Cleaners are a group of people who are immune to the effects of the Devil Worm parasite and thus cannot become Ridden. They’ve managed to survive the apocalypse and have become hardened by the tragic and horrendous events. Now the Cleaners have rallied together to take on the parasite in an effort to try and take back what little might be left of the world.
The eight Cleaners in Back 4 Blood makeup the playable characters you will encounter. Each of them will have their own rich backstory and motivations for how they find themselves fighting against such a terrifying enemy. Some are fighting by choice whilst others more out of necessity. Either way, they now find themselves teaming up against a common and very deadly enemy.
Back 4 Blood will tell the tale of each of the Cleaners as they battle through every deadly level. Through interactions between characters and other dialogue you will learn more about them and the world around you.
