Elden Ring Review Roundup

It’s finally here alongside a tonne of Elden Ring reviews. The huge followup to Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Demon’s Souls, and Sekiro is emerging from development to take up permanent space on our hard drives. It’s fair to say that there are no games more anticipated than Elden Ring. FromSoftware are masters of their craft, so it’s absolutely understandable that excitement for their latest grand adventure is at unprecedented levels.

Reviewers have had time to put the game through its paces, see the bosses, die, get better, die again, and finally emerge triumphant with a review score in place.

If you’re unsure about whether or not to take the plunge on Elden Ring or just want to push your excitement to a brand new level, here’s some highlights in our Elden Ring Review Roundup.

Elden Ring Reviews

IGN – 10/10

“It is no exaggeration to say that Elden Ring is FromSoftware’s largest and most ambitious game yet, and that ambition has more than paid off. Even after 87 hours of blood, sweat, and tears that included some of the most challenging fights I’ve ever fought, and innumerable surprises, there are still bosses that I left on the table, secrets that I’ve yet to uncover, sidequests that I missed out on, tons of weapons, spells, and skills that I’ve never used. And this is all on top of PVP and cooperative play that I’ve barely been able to scratch the surface of.”

Eurogamer – Essential

“Elden Ring remains a glorious game, one that established fans are going to savour for some time to come, and one that may just welcome new fans into the FromSoft fold. Sumptuous visual design, dark and detailed lore and a vast-but-intricate open world are reason enough to venture out into the Lands Between. Add to that FromSoftware’s unforgiving and unforgettable gameplay loop and this is something truly special.”

PCGamesN – 10/10

“Elden Ring has wormed its way deep inside my head. I can’t stop thinking about it and I want to talk about it endlessly. There’s something to pore over in every nook and cranny of the world. I want to talk about how it has a genuinely laugh-out-loud Dark Souls easter egg, about its apparent obsession with baby birds and embryos, or about how I learned all my most powerful spells from a giant tortoise wearing a pope hat. I’ve found more special items and mysteries in a few hours of Elden Ring than in all the bloated runtimes of Assassin’s Creed.”

The Guardian – 5/5

“Video games can be all kinds of different things, representing all manner of artistic ambitions. Most, however, share a common goal: to conjure a compelling fictional reality, filled with beckoning mysteries, enchanting secrets, and enriching opportunities to compete and collaborate. They aim to provide a liminal space in which a determined player can fix that which is broken, order that which is chaotic. By this definition, at least, Elden Ring is the finest video game yet made. Its final gift is the assurance that, whatever monsters lurk in a broken world, with perseverance and cooperation, they too can be overcome – all without losing the mystery and wonder that makes our existence beguiling, infuriating, and fascinating.”

PC Gamer – 90%

“Elden Ring is junk food for FromSoftware fans. It’s more of what I already adore, but family sized. It has everything that makes these games so intoxicating, and that lodges their intricate fiction into my brain. But its devotion to what came before is distracting. It dulls the impact of those moments where Elden Ring leaps beyond its past to demonstrate why FromSoftware’s games are unparalleled by all who attempt to replicate them. As another Souls game, I love Elden Ring, but as the latest game from FromSoftware, I wanted it to dream a little bigger.”

Rock, Paper, Shotgun – Bestest Bests

“That’s the thing about Elden Ring, its open world has your back, in its own – often painful – way. Souls has always been about inching through claustrophobic corridors and bashing your skull against whatever’s in the way. You compare foreheads with friends, “Look at this bruise Barry, that’s me five hours in”. And Barry would probably peel his hair back and reveal the exact same bruise. Adventures in past Souls games tend to line up, as you’re all wandering down the same pathways. But that’s not the case with Elden Ring. You might show your bruise to Barry and he’ll peel his hair back to reveal a scar or a massive indent or a tattoo of a mouse tustling with a skeleton. Both of may be five hours in but you’ll be on totally different trajectories. No matter how hostile the game’s world may be, it pushes you to succeed and carve out your own adventures. It is, by far, the most encouraging Souls yet.”

Destructoid – 10/10

“To say I was blown away by Elden Ring is an understatement. Sure it’s still going to appear esoteric and unapproachable to a subset of people. There are things it could still do better in terms of onboarding, and it could do even more on the front of quality-of-life enhancements for returning Souls players.

But as an experience, it’s one of the most wondrous and open-ended games I’ve played in years. It has so much to say from a design perspective that people will be talking about its choices for years on end, and playing it for longer.”
