It’s certainly fair to say that across the more than 100 plus hours of Persona 5 you’ll meet a veritable smorgasbord of different characters. From Ann Takamaki to Yusuke Kitagawa, we’ll go through each of the Phantom Thieves in turn, detailing their backgrounds, confidants and arcanas that you’ll need to get the absolute most from them.
Persona 5 Characters – Ann Takamaki
A foreign student and model, Ann Takamaki is a key component of the Phantom Thieves thanks to Carmen, her Persona character. Capable of dishing out high fire damage whilst being able to confuse foes, Carmen’s magic offensive skill proves to be an essential one – especially when paired with her concentration skill later on in the game. Unlocking Ann’s Lovers Confidant tree and social link couldn’t be easier – just beat the first palace and away you go.
Persona 5 Characters – Futaba Sakura
The resident nerd of the Phantom Thieves, Futaba Sakura is a somewhat unusual, yet caring member of the team whose selfless nature easily makes her one of the most compelling and likeable members of the group. Her Persona, Necronomicon, reflects this benevolent state of mind too (despite its appearance as a mildly gothic looking UFO), as it buffs and enhances other members of the group. Futaba’s Hermit Arcana can be unlocked by meeting up with her outside Cafe Leblanc before heading down to Akihabara with her.
Persona 5 Characters – Haru Okumura
The heiress to a burger empire and a noted greenfinger, the shy Haru Okumura proves her worth to the Phantom Thieves in many ways. Chiefly, her Persona, a musketeer called Milady, is something of a jack of all trades that boasts especially strong Gun and Psy skills to boot. In order to unlock Haru’s Empress Arcana you’ll first need to locate her on the rooftop of Shujin Academy at the beginning of October. Once completed, Haru will be able to grow crops on the school rooftop, helping the other Phantom Thieves in battle.
Persona 5 Characters – Joker (Protagonist)
The main protagonist of Persona 5, Joker is the character you’ll likely be spending the most time with during the game. An occasionally charismatic though reserved individual, Joker is the leader of the Phantom Thieves and has the unique ability of being able to summon multiple Personas at once.
Persona 5 Characters – Makoto Niijima
Something of an academic overachiever, Makoto Niijima is easily one of the most powerful Phantom Thieves in Persona 5. Emboldened by her biker Persona Johanna, Makoto is a devastatingly effective all-rounder that combines substantial damage output with highly useful buffs. Unlocking Makato’s Priestess Arcana requires a bit of work. Firstly, you need to make sure that you have levelled up to knowledge rank three, as you need this to hang with Makoto and her toweringly high intellect. Next, you need to speak to Makoto in June either at the gates during a day off, or on the third floor of the school. Once you’ve fulfilled both pre-requisites you can get started.
Persona 5 Characters – Morgana
A silver-tongued feline from the Metaverse, Morgana’s luck and healing based abilities make him an indispensable member of the Phantom Thieves. Even better, Morgana’s Magician Confidant is unlocked automatically as you progress through the game. Job done!
Persona 5 Characters – Ryuji Sakamoto
The firebrand of the Phantom Thieves, the ever loyal Ryuji Sakamoto is technically the second in charge of the group. His Persona, the daunting pirate Captain Kidd, is an extremely accomplished offensive fighter capable of turning the tide of any battle with his extremely high damage output and attack power buffs. Ryuji’s Chariot Confidant is automatically activated as you play through the game.
Persona 5 Characters – Yusuke Kitagawa
An eccentric though sensitive and affable artist, Yusuke Kitagawa earns his keep in the Phantom Thieves on account of his Goemon Persona, which enables him to deal massive amounts of damage that is magnified against fire affiliated foes. Yusuke’s Emperor Confidant is available after the second palace and can be triggered by heading to the underground station. An extremely worthwhile confidant, Yusuke’s Emperor Confidant enables him to fashion cards that provide other Personas in the group with a range of special abilities.
