It’s not been out for long, but the Xbox Series X has already proven itself to be quite the compelling next-gen console. As well as the beefy specifications under the hood that power the latest and greatest games, the Xbox Game Pass service ensures that those who manage to pick up one of Microsoft’s monolithic mini fridges will be flush with amazing games to play. So with that in mind, we’re going to run through our favorite Xbox Series X games, so you can check out some of the console’s best experiences over the holiday season. If you’re new to the Microsoft ecosystem or just looking for something new and exciting to play, we’re sure this list will leave you spoiled for choice.
Halo Infinite
It would be foolish to temper anything else as the definitive Xbox Series X game. The latest entry in Microsoft’s flagship shooter franchise brings Master Chief into a brave next-gen dimension. On the back foot against The Banished, players will reclaim a gigantic open world from hordes of enemies. Armed with new weapons, flat-pack vehicles and an AI assistant, Halo Infinite is a stunning adventure that calls back to the old games while introducing plenty of modern refinements.
Forza Horizon 5
Another flagship Microsoft franchise, the Forza Horizon series has long been renowned for its gigantic open-world playgrounds and bustling vehicular toybox. Regardless of whether you’re into cars or not, peeling around the various biomes of Mexico in a sports car is ridiculous fun, and its absurd approach to driving makes it accessible for all ages. As well as being a means to push the Series X to its graphical limits, there’s simply so much to do in Forza Horizon 5 and so many sticky progression loops to get caught. It will be hard to put this game down once you pick it up.
Psychonauts 2
If you don’t want to deal with alien gunk or molten rubber, you should check out the Double Fine’s plucky platformer Psychonauts 2; another first-party smash hit that launched earlier this year on Xbox Series X. As Razputin Aquato, you’ll delve inside countless minds to solve internal problems and fight manifestations of mental health. It’s a thoughtful but deeply funny game about empathy that everyone should play if they’re looking for some light this Christmas.
Sea of Thieves
An oldie but a goodie, Sea of Thieves has been consistently updated and refined since its initial launch in 2018, which has led to it becoming one of the essential experiences on Xbox Series X. Especially if you’re looking for something to play in multiplayer with your friends, this pirate adventure is literally a perfect storm as you sail the seven seas, loot underwater vaults for treasure and fight skeleton lords. Just remember that communication and cooperation are key and you’ll get far with this deeply-charming game.
