Resident Evil is a series that has redefined fear in video games time and again. From the first game to Resident Evil Village, the series has specialised in bringing horrifying creations to life in extreme grotesque detail through its disturbing monsters.
It’s time to take a look then through the catalogue of Resident Evil monsters, focusing on the scariest and most terrifying enemies in the series. So take a deep breath, calm your nerves, and let’s dive into the most terrifying monsters ever created.
Mr. X – Resident Evil 2
Mr. X is terrifying for two simple reasons. The first is his unstoppable nature, coming across like a deadly cross between the Terminator and the Nemesis seen in later games. The second reason Mr. X is one of Resident Evil’s scariest monsters is because he’s almost human in appearance.
There’s a chilling feeling being pursued by something with a blank human expression, always focused on your death but not showing any emotion. It harkens back to being chased by blank-faced serial killers in films such as Halloween, but as always with Resident Evil, it has a grotesque twist.
Marguerite Baker – Resident Evil VII
Speaking of grotesque, here’s Marguerite. The matriarch of the Baker family, Marguerite has become unhinged due to the mutations she’s undergone, and worse – she has gained control over thousands of skittering, teeming mutant insects.
She’s responsible for some of the scariest moments of Resident Evil VII, and some of the most disgusting. When you finally see Marguerite’s form you see the swollen, distended hive that has grown from her body. It’s the stuff of nightmares, and makes her a worthy inclusion in any list of the scariest Resident Evil Monsters.
Lisa Trevor – Resident Evil (2002)
Lisa Trevor had a terrible life even before mutations took hold of her. Experimented on and raised in seclusion, Lisa Trevor experienced the worst of what humanity has to offer. Twisted by her upbringing and the experiments she was forced to endure, she has become a super-strong creature obsessed with collecting human faces.
A shambling wreck bound by her captors and to life through her own regenerative abilities, Lisa Trevor is one of the scariest monsters in the Resident Evil series, in part because of the sadness of her backstory as well as the truly horrifying appearances she makes throughout the 2002 version of the original game.
Regeneradors – Resident Evil 4
There’s a clue to one of the reasons Regeneradors are so scary in their name. They are resistant to most forms of damage and can even regenerate limbs should they be separated from their bodies.
Living bioweapons, their gaping maws and slow approaches mark them out amongst Resident Evil 4’s enemies. They walk towards you, always coming no matter how many rounds you fire into their bodies. Whip-like cords reassemble their lost pieces in moments, making them a truly terrifying foe to face.
Nosferatu – Resident Evil – Code: Veronica
Finally, we come to Nosferatu. Like many creatures on this list, Alexander Ashford is as much a victim as he is a monster. Though in his case, Alexander caused many of his own problems. After many experiments whilst working for the Umbrella Corporation, some of his own creations captured him and forced the T-Veronica virus upon him.
This mutated him into a bloodthirsty, vampire-like creature who was swiftly captured and entombed in a secret room. Finally unleashed in Resident Evil – Code: Veronica he is a terrifying opponent, long tentacles that threaten to kill all who come near attached to a slim figure still bound in the centre of his twisted mass. This is why he’s definitely one of Resident Evil’s scariest monsters, and something that will live on in the memories of anyone who has played this instalment.
