Game description

Sunset Invasion + Old Gods

lairdjaren

While Sunset Invasion may add some fanciful history, it also offers some fun challenges and a bit of game balancing. In CK2, Western Europe is fairly well shielded from expansionist Muslim and Mongol hordes. Sunset Invasion can balance out this iniquity by ensuring Christians on both sides of the map live in fear of invasion. Also, if you get the Old Gods DLC, which makes the pagan factions playable, then guess what? Sunset Invasion + Old Gods unlocks the Aztecs! That's right, you too strike terror in your enemies as you sacrifice prisoners in the name of the gods.

Alternate History is Fun

ConorEngelb

Historical accuracy is always the first thing to go when starting up a game of Crusader Kings. William the Conqueror often doesn't become 'the Conqueror', instead dying of all manner of things: a wound, an accident, an "accident", or just packing up and going home for whatever reason. So, really, a gigantic horde of Aztecs landing on European shores doesn't seem all that far-fetched. It makes for a challenging fight mid-game and, in combination with the CK2+ mod (which alters the likelihood of the invasion occurring) adds an element of unpredictability. Worth it for the fun, but you aren't missing out on anything major if you don't have this DLC.

Extra Spice

This is an interesting expansion, it adds some fun to mess with Aztecs in Iberia and Africa but it has a problem. Aztecs are, either too powerful for you and slay everything and everyone, generally if Europe is too divided; or they are too weak to be any danger, especially if Europe is united. You might want to get this when it is cheap but otherwise I wouldn't bother much.

Ahistorical and turbulent addition to the CKII world

kaleid0sc0pic

The Sunset Invasion DLC, allowing the player to experience a European invasion by the Aztec nation in the fourteenth century, is the first of Paradox Interactive's ahistorical DLCs and because of this, it's probably always going to divide opinion. If you prize historical accuracy, if you what you enjoy most about the game is entering the medieval mindset, then you can probably skip the DLC. But if you like unpredictability, like random invasions somewhere on the Atlantic side of the map with horrible plagues to boot, then maybe it's worth a try.

When you just start thinking the game is getting stale

ExpiredJordan

First off, this DLC is completely unnecessary and if you haven't had basic history class then you will know that it is also not historically accurate. With all of that aside Sunset Invasion is a great DLC for near end game empires, because it gives them a true opponent. The Aztecs are coming by the thousands and they are pissed. As soon as they land it is a land grab, with Portugal and much of spain first to go. If you are fortunate enough to be in England or Ireland to be to quick to laugh, because shortly after the first invasion force a second one will steamroll its way through your lands. This is where all the surviving empires can hopefully make a pact to push back the Aztec invaders before it is too late. For me Crusader Kings 2 has started to become a little stale especially late game, but this DLC changed that for me, and any DLC that makes me want to play the main game long after I have played it for its worth I would say is a good deal.
