For cousins Niko and Roman, dreams of making it big quickly turn into a nightmare as they learn that those who have the money are well respected and make the rules. Those who don?t, like the cousins, life can be a living hell. It is a great premise to the game, and the game itself is actually enjoyable to a certain extent when it actually works smoothly. It is too bad that it doesn?t, and hasn?t run smoothly for awhile thanks to Games for Windows Live stopping their service which impacted this game in a very bad way. And the developer has yet to release a patch to fix it despite it being years. There are a number of workarounds to the problem, but even if you can get the game working you have to then struggle with getting saves to work. And this gets even worse since recently Rockstar?s parent company shutdown a modding tool that was used in a lot of mods for both Grand Theft Auto 4 and 5 despite the software only use was for single player and not multiplayer. It is a bad move that hasn?t done these games and favors since the lack of a patch for Grand Theft Auto 4 has already had them in a bad light to begin with. PROS: -Open world with a lot of vehicles to play around with. CONS -Games for Windows Live problems with no actual patches addressing the matter. -Parent company shutdown OpenIV, the largest tool in the modding community for this game. -Lack of support from developers is atrocious. This game is a complete mess and not worth the money.
The game itself us fun, as most Grand Theft Auto games tend to be, with a great story and amazing graphics. Though the driving can be a little off compared to the other games in the series or games like Saints Row. That really isn't a game breaker as the game itself would be worth 4 or 5 stars if it wasn't for the huge problems that plague it causing me a number of headaches. Once upon a time there was a DRM service called Games for Windows Live. Sadly that didn't get a happy ever after since it closed down causing problems with a lot of games that used it. Thankfully most companies quickly patched their games fixing those problems and removing this little headache. Not Grand Theft Auto IV though, it is still in the game and despite numerous guides on how to fix it or work around it, it is still one massively huge headache. I've had it on two different computers, both running Windows 10 and for some weird reason following the same exact steps on both machines got it working on one while not on the other. This almost caused me to give the game 1 star, but the game itself is fun so I decided to split the difference somewhat. I can't in good faith suggest it to anyone because of this though, nor the DLC Episodes From Liberty City which is sad because it is one of the best DLC packages out there if it wasn't for this problem.
This game is pretty good, on its own. If you're judging games by the hour per dollar formula, this one is almost free. There are many before me who said this filling pages in the process, so let me add something new: This game is the best spiderman game there is! For real, if you download the mods, you can play as him, web swing in liberty city, and fight crime! Even better, there are tons of other heroes. Just look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=immZ8Ed2Wa4&t=229s And that is just one subgenre of mods! So yeah, you want a truly moddable game, you need to buy this! :)
As a game that follows the story of two cousins, GTA 4 really captures a lot into its story to highlight some of the problems that exist in society (debt, crime, etc.) and the "American Dream" that people were misled by. Vehicle handling is also pretty realistic, although a little too boat-like and skiddy. The only issues that I have with the game are legacy related, namely Rockstar's Social Club login which is often inconsistent and the multiplayer which is now mostly barren.
After Grand Theft Auto: Vice City this franchise never was the same. San Andreas was grey, drugged up and sad with some nice humour, but it was still good, but people were waiting for the main entry in the series. After years of waiting, we got 4 and it's good. Graphics are really good and it's nice engine got the upgrade instead of rehashing 3 like VC and SA did. While the city is nice, it feels more like a rehash of 3 in this regard, only bigger. Story has some incredibly funny moments, but in comparison to Vice City, it falls flat fast, especially the Russian part. Worst thing about this game, though, are difficulty spikes. Most of the missions are incredibly easy, except few that are real hair pullers, like last mission, where you have to chase waterboat with motorcycle - it's incredibly annoying and nearly impossible to do. Also, in my opinion, in my opinion soundtrack after Vice City has gotten worse, with less rocking tunes and more pop/rap, here it's the same case, sadly. Thankfully, you can still insert your own playlist. Overall, this game is solid, it has the same fantastic and fun gameplay of GTA, but to me it's not as good as Vice City is. Still, if you're fan of the series, it's recommended, and if you never played it, give it a shot, you won't be disappointed.
