Nintendo always introduces new amazing ideas to the table. While there were some level editors on PC introducing a whole game based on making and sharing levels among other players was simply brilliant. This introduces almost endless combinations limited only by the imagination of the creators. Worth checking out, just be warned that this is not a game in a traditional sense because you will not find any plot, you just play other user levels.
Super Mario Maker is the culmination of 2D Mario games, simply giving almost every tool available to make our own 2D Super Mario levels. The sheer imagination some people have designing levels is incredible, this is worth it even if you can't design good levels. You can still try, but the community is so wonderful, and you can find levels for all skill levels from disgustingly easy to insultingly hard. Of course, there are troll levels... a lot of them, but there are some true gems here. Nothing quite has come close to Nintendo quality, but the creators have some real passion for this series and you can create so many different levels, only real limit is your imagination.
Mario level editor sounded like a dream come true, and to a degree it is. While level editor idea sounds really awesome, what is bad about it is nowadays community that love to make troll stages, which is around 90% of this game's content. Also, at times it feels like a wasted opportunity, because it would've been awesome if you could mix 2 styles of games, say jump from New Super Mario Brothers U to Super Mario World in the same stage. Level editor part itself is pretty simple and enjoyable, but with the amount of troll stages, don't expect much people playing yours without spamming its code everywhere. Really bad thing, though, is that you have limited numbered storage for your stages, which means once you're run out, you will have to delete yor previously created stages forever, because you can't store them on hard drive. This is biggest flaw of this game. What is worse is that to make the number of stages you can store bigger, you must get golden coins, which you only get when someone will like your stage, which takes forever. Overall, not bad, but it could've been better.
As an old-school gamer who was 6 years old when the original Super Mario Bros came out, this game is one of the things my inner child is utterly thrilled with. My older brother and I would sit designing our own Super Mario levels using graph paper, working out how many squares Mario could jump, producing scale drawings - we had so much fun back in the day, and the only thing missing was the ability to play it. 30-odd years later, we finally get that dream. Mario Maker is every bit as perfect as you would expect. A wealth of options, so easily interchanged from level to level, from game style to game style. Add to that the Challenge modes, and the endless amounts of levels available from players the world over (including some which are just unbelievably complex, imaginative, challenging, brilliant and inspired in equal measures) and a community of people who GENUINELY love the series and the platform the game provides, and Super Mario Maker is firmly cemented as yet another example of a "must-have" Wii-U title. Wonderful game. Worth every single penny.
