Monolith. What is Monolith? Why did I use it as first word in my review? Well, it's very important. Blood was first game Monolith ever made. You should remember this name because they made many great games. So, about Blood. Amazing atmosphere is first thing you will feel when playing it. Like you can guess, it's full of blood, and sick ideas - really, eevs nowadays wouldn't ever thought about making some of stuff included in Blood. Also Caleb, main character, is awesome - very memorable one if you ask me, like Duke Nukem. Nowadays we don't get very memorable characters, only some random guys or "you are the main hero" stuff. Like many old games, it's rather hard while playing it for first time. Very good soundtrack, design of levels, weapons (voodoo doll for the win!) and stuff I mentioned will make your adventure with Blood unforgetable one. If you want to taste "the best" of old games this is a great game to do it.
Blood is one of the famed big four build engine titles from the late 1990’s, and probably the second best in my opinion, after Duke Nukem 3D. You take the role of Caleb, and undead vampiric gunslinger who is out for revenge, and up against the Cabal, a cult that he was very unceremoniously cut from years ago, leading to his banishment for a hundred years. Graphically, the game is dated, no doubt, and it has not been offered the high definition character models and textures that other games like it have, like DN3D and Shadow Warrior. The reason for this is simple: the game’s source code was never released, so there’s little that one can do to make the game look or play better, apart from some fixes that can be tricky to apply if you don’t know what you’re doing. This also makes it harder to run the game on modern operating systems and hardware. The sound is good enough, with Caleb often uttering remarks or singing show tunes while slaughtering anyone who gets in his way. And the music is quite moving. The gameplay is pretty simplistic – it has you shooting people and getting keys to open doors – most of what you would expect from a 90’s FPS, very similar to DN3D or Doom, with not much that differs from those game, except maybe the pickups, like different types of armour, i.e. spiritual armour that will protect you from incorporeal (i.e. ghosts) fiends, and the fact that you can kick body parts like heads around once you’ve decapitated zombies and so on. The weapons are also quite unique, but largely based on the use of explosives. The enemy AI is good enough, but can be exploited, like being able to sneak past enemies’ “peripheral vision”. Don’t be fooled though. This game can get very challenging, especially against groups of enemies. All in all, it’s a good game and I recommend it for anyone looking for an old school shooter experience. It has violence, it has humour, and yet it’s still very dark in theme. At a price like this, with the expansions, it’s well worth it.
Like DOOM, Blood is a very old First Person Shooter. Forget the space marines, this time it's all about the Occult, dark gods and monsters. The atmosphere is even grimmer than DOOM's. The level design is excellent (As elaborate as in Duke Nukem 3D or Shadow Warrior Classic) and the combats are as frantic as 90's shooter could get. But the weapons are the real treat here. The developpers were very creative while making those tools of death. Pitchwork, voodoo doll... Good old shotgun is here too! You must buy this game. Blood is one of the greatest shooters of all time!
