I am by no means an old-school gamer, but I have no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best racing games out there. Period. You get to choose your hovercraft and race and shoot and dodge your way through a variety of well-designed maps. The 3D racing concept is so different and fun. I mean, It's basically like a really competitive Starfox. This unique racing game is an absolute gem.
SlipStream 5000 is trying to mix classic and racing games, and it succeeded in the former not the latter, so yes the game visuals are classic and physics are classic and controls are classic, so pretty much everything is classic in it, but as a racing game it does not deliver a true experience for this specific genre. I was hoping for wider types of races but the current aerial style might be acceptable for some, but generally this game is lacking a lot of core features. one main thing that you need to do before purchasing anything and especially classics is to watch sufficient amount of gameplay videos in order to make a final decision.
SlipStream 5000 offers ten different and unique characters to race as and tracks to race on. You will control your aircraft from a first person view, a targeting reticle is in the middle of your screen and you will use that and the games auto targeting to fire at your opponents as you attempt to pass them. Hitting targets is easy but they will be doing the same to you. During races you can find multiple pickups, including money which can be used to buy upgrades in between races. Stages take you all over the world to different environments and give you multiple paths to take to get through them. This game was meant to be played with a joystick and trying to play with the old keyboard controls is really going to hurt your enjoyment of the title, even more so with many of the stages narrow corridors and sharp turns. The game was impressive back in 95 but is going to be very dated now, if you are able to use a joystick while playing the game you might have some fun but there are better racing games to play now.
