When this game was released, i was not able to understand how it managed to be such a amazing game. Soldiers: Heroes of WW2 looked like basic real time strategy title, but it was not. When I playedncouple of hours, I thought this title was something like "commandos". I played game like commandos and liked much. When finished two first maps I managed to get my soldier to "direct control mode". Wow! I could move one of my soldiers with WASD buttons and aim with mouse:) This game made my childhood wargame dreams true. I could play with stealth like commandos and move explosive barrel next to house full of enemies. Then shoot barrel and boom! And wow...house is destroyed with cool physics modeling. I managed also set nearly forest fire with tinderbox. I steal heavy machine gun from desroyed tank wreckage. And tanks..wow! First time it matters where to shoot. You must know vehicles' weak spots. What a simulator game. And so good looking still. Only textures are little of blurred with modern screens. Good map design makes this game a masterpiece. This is better than its followers (Men of War titles)
I think, back in 2004 the Soldiers: Heroes of WWII changed the lineup of strategy games. The Best Way made a good job. They made a strategy game that is more interactive than other strategy games before. We can control every single unit directly, so the gameplay is more fun than a traditional strategy game. It's like an isometric WWII sim but mainly this just a strategy game and a good one. We can disassemble machine guns from a combat vehicle, hide in cover, take advantage of the terrain, etc. The graphics, sound and the effects are quite good with today's eye, so we can totally enjoy it today too.
